Everything here reminded her of—
Him, she realized, with a brackish hint of distain welling up at the back of her mouth.
The pale honey blooms that faded away at her touch, and monuments of ancient steel that bore no light save for its own dull luster.
She knelt down and plucked a flower. The stalk was firm and crisp beneath her touch, but when she bent to sniff it, the petals crumbled way into nothingness, leaving their elusive scent merely a dream on the breeze. It was his semi-sweet smell that the flowers gave off—wafts of sweat and roses and a touch of amaranth. She smiled, her eyes closing as she became lost in the memories of bygone days.
Days, she recalled, were filled with light and life and laughter. But then she realized she was mistaken. She had forgotten the constant reminders of death and bloodshed that stemmed from the effusive spring of desperation and terror.
What reminded her of him most was the sky. It was the hue of amaryllis, and the hue of the blood that he made fall from the heavens.
Now she remembered—it was he who made the sky rain blood.
