Prologue
"And the first? Isn't impressed. It already knows us. Knows everything we can do and its laughing. You want to surprise the enemy? Surprise yourselves. Force yourselves to do what can't be done or else were not an army. Just a bunch of girls waiting to be picked off and buried" I pause waiting for my words to sink in. I was tired. Tired of this war that had barely even began to start yet. Tired of no one taking this whole mess seriously and so tired of being the one everyone turned to for every single thing. Tired. To increase my irritation Spike moved from his perch and not so subtly moved towards the first door.
"Where are you going?" my words coming out irritable.
"Out. Since I'm neither a girl nor waiting, all this speechifying doesn't really apply to me, does it?" He spoke as he looked around the room acknowledging the girls.
Temper rising, I snapped back the words I knew would disarm him "Take a cell phone. That way, if I need someone to get weepy or wailed on, I can call you".
Spike freezes in his tracks and turns around slowly to face me. Cold unadulterated fury masking his features. "If you've got something to say…"
"I just said it" I retorted "Keep holding back Spike and you might as well walk out that door."
"Holding back? You're blind. I've been here, right in it. Fighting. Scrapping"
Knowing I was going too far I pushed even further when I voiced the line that could not have been less true "Since you got your soul back?" A flash of hurt crossed his features before he buried it with his own rage.
"Matter of fact, I'm just not relishing a kill the way I used to" His words bitter and almost regretful, not of what he said but of what he used to be. I knew I was getting to him and I kept pushing.
"You were a better fighter then" Almost wanting to smile smugly, I pushed it away as soon as I saw the expression on Spikes face. Had I gone too far?
"I did this for you! The Soul, the changes. It's what you wanted!" My chest tightened and a part of me almost wanted to take back my next words, but I couldn't. I couldn't look weak in front of everyone.
"What I want is the Spike who's dangerous. The one who tried to kill me when we met"
"Oh you don't know how close you are to bringing him out" A dark glimmer crossed his eyes but it wasn't hatred or anything remotely violent, it was wanting.
"I'm nowhere near him"
