Alfred is always jittery with enthusiasm and excitement. He loves to be in constant motion, loves to feel the sunshine on his skin and the wind in his hair. Alfred loves the city life – the constant flow of people, the all-night food joints and the never ending forms of entertainment. The only thing Alfred dislikes about the city is all the light. Its fine during the day because the sun blocks it all out, but at night the lights drown out the stars.

Every so often Alfred finds that he has to leave. He hates to go alone though. He hates the echoing darkness that comes with the stars; the coldness, the emptiness, and the loneliness. On the nights when Alfred feels he has to get away from the city lights he packs a picnic. Then he drives with all the windows down so he can feel the summer breeze brush past him. Alfred always picks Katyusha up for these midnight adventures and she is always waiting for him, expectantly and patiently outside her house. Alfred likes to pretend he is unpredictable, but she always knows when he needs to get away (she says it happens like clockwork).

Katyusha always smiles and wordlessly gets into the car when he picks her up. They drive for miles until they manage to escape the glow of the city. When they finally get far enough away Alfred pulls off the road and they sit on the roof, curled up under a blanket and eating Alfred's packed food. They stare up at the stars together. Alfred used to explain all the constellations to her, complete with the myths that accompanied them, but these days he is the one who listens. Katyusha has myths of her own about the stars and Alfred is content to listen.

He worries though because soon her myths are going to end. He has been reading astronomy textbooks though, trying to learn facts about the different things they see on these excursions, so they will have something new to talk about. Anything to ensure that Katyusha will keep coming out here with so they can have these quiet moments together. Just them and the stars.
