A/N: Here I am, trying to understand what drove Lorelai to marry Christopher.

I'm sorry for my bad grammar! Please tell me what you thought, it'd make me very, very happy!

Why Not?

"Why not?" asked Christopher and Lorelai's thoughts echoed 'why not?'. She tried to think a reason not to say yes and a voice in her head screamed 'Luke!' so loudly that she wanted to cover her ears to silence it. There was no Luke. Luke was in the past. Luke didn't want her. Luke let her walk away. Luke didn't say 'why not' or 'let's do this' or 'my car'. Luke said 'I can't jump'. There was no Luke. Luke was not a reason to say no. Stop thinking about Luke, Lorelai!

She looked at Christopher, who was so eager to jump that he was pulling her by her hand down the cliff she wasn't sure she was ready to leave. She looked at this great, kind man who loved her and her daughter. While Luke had done the small things, like cleaned her skates and taught her how to fish and made her thousands of cups of coffee, and those things she had, at the time, considered as big things, like build her a chubbah and made her and ice rink, he hadn't done those really big things, like told her about having a daughter or married her. Christopher had never done the small things but he did the big things, like shared his secrets and his daughter with her. And Lorelai tried to decide which one was more important; the small things or the big things. And all that time Christopher kept pulling her hand and Luke was not.

Luke was not.

Luke was not ready get married and she was, she was so ready, had been so ready. She had been so ready to marry Luke because Luke was The One, she knew he was, even after everything that had happened. Luke had been there for her when she most needed someone to be there for her. Luke had kept her on her feet when Rory was away. Who would keep her on her feet now that Luke was away? Would Christopher? Somehow she doubted he would. But maybe keeping her on her feet was one of those small things Luke did but Chritopher didn't.

She knew that if she'd say yes it'd be the third time she was engaged within seven years. And she wouldn't break up a third engagement, the third one would be the last one. This was Chris, after all, this was the father of her child, this was the man who had been convincing her to say yes for twentyfive years. Did Luke convince her to say yes? Did Luke convince her that he loved her? Luke never spoke about his feelings. Luke never -

What did it matter what Luke did or didn't do when Luke wasn't here in Paris with her asking her to marry him! Luke was back in Stars Hollow with his daughter he didn't want her to meet, building a life he didn't want to share with her, saying things like 'you're the one who proposed' and 'we're not right together' and 'you don't belong with me' like everything they had had been nothing to him.

Everyone said Lorelai and Christopher belonged together. Emily had tried to make this happen for years and years again. Richard was the one who came up with the idea in the first place. Rory had tried to tell her she should marry him. Even Luke... Even Luke said she belonged with Christopher!

So maybe it was her who had been wrong all these years when she had told herself and everyone else why she shouldn't marry Chritopher. Maybe she really should marry him, have a life with him, have a family with him.

Maybe it wasn't Luke who was her whole package. Maybe it was Christopher. And maybe he wasn't The One, but he was The Second, and as The One didn't...

What did she have to lose anyway?

"Yeah, why not."
