I'LL BE WAITING
In the aftermath of Divide and Conquer some time you need to hear your own advice coming from someone you trust.
A small glow of light filtered through the doorway as Jack walked into the large silent room. As the door closed silently behind him he made his way to the desk in the center of the space. Holding onto the desk with one hand for support he lowered himself to the floor his legs stretched out in front of him and his head resting against the edge of the desk top. There was only a faint glow of light filtering down from the observation room as he sat in the shadow cast by the desk.
"A really amazing woman once told me, 'If you don't look back at the past you can't learn and move forward into your future.' Now here is mine, 'you can't change what has happened but you have to trust that it happened for a reason' " he said quietly whilst turning his head towards the figure sitting beside him.
"What if something happened that you can't trust to have a reason behind it" she said as she lifted her head and looked towards him. The signs of tears were left around her eyes and her voice was awash with sadness and confusion.
"Maybe the way you look at it will determine what you do with your future" he said turning his upper body to face her. A small smile crossed her features as she looked at him,
"You know you really are a lot smarter than you think you are," she stated looking at his face for the reaction.
"Nah, I'm just holding back so you can steal all my glory," he said with a goofy smile that always made her giggle. "Ha. No giggling" he said raising a finger in warning.
"Sorry" she said. They were both still smiling but it didn't cover up the angst they still saw in each others eyes. "Don't you just wish that things would happen differently?" she asked still looking at his face.
"Like what?"
"I don't know. Like today, and all that has happened"
"Which part?"
"Good point." She said looking down at her hands as they rested in her lap. "I wish dad could have been here" she said quietly.
"That would have gone down well, I would sit here whilst he was up there in the observation room and say, 'by the way I'm in love with your daughter'" he stated sarcastically "he would have kicked my ass even if it were the only way to save our lives."
"No he wouldn't" she protested.
"Why not? I would have" he said looking at her. She turned her head towards him and looked at his eyes.
"Because, you make me happy and I'm a better person because of it" she turned her head away from his and looked in front of her "plus I wouldn't have let him, you might not be able to hit him but I can" she said a smile now on her face again as she still looked ahead.
"I meant what I said you know" he said still turned to look at her. She shuffled closer and looked at him again before resting her head on his shoulder.
"I know, and even though nothing can happen it doesn't stop me from loving you too" she stated calmly.
"I'll always be here" he said quietly.
"And I'll be waiting" she replied as he wrapped his arm round her shoulders.
