I could hear Mousefur trying to get past me, trying to go back into camp for that wretched piece of fresh-kill. I was blocking her way when I heard her begin to slip past me, I turned as fast as I could. "I'll get the fresh-kill." That was what I called over my shoulder, before I slipped past Firestar, Brambleclaw, and Lionblaze, before I raced across camp to the Elders Den, before I heard Dovepaw crying out in terror, before Briarpaw followed me into camp.
I pelted as fast as a blind cat could without falling on the cold, hard ground. The pounding of running paws came from behind me, and I caught a familiar scent. Briarpaw! The ThunderClan apprentice must have followed me. "Go back to the others Briarpaw."
"It's not safe in camp, Longtail!"
There was no time for arguing, I plunged into the depths of the Elders Den just as a loud crack thundered through the camp. I swung my body protectively around Briarpaw, who had followed me into the den, hoping that it was not true.
I heard it a few moments before I felt it. The branch came crashing down with the most extraordinary crack. The pain was brief, it didn't last long.
Everything came to me in a blur; Firestar joining the clan, Tigerstar's betrayal, BloodClan invading, losing my sight and finally, travelling to the lake.
I heard Lionblaze crashing through the branches of the fallen tree, calling Briarpaw and myself. It was too late; I could see my kin now.
The last thing I heard before I entered StarClan was the howling wind.
