Tenzin walked into his oldest daughter's room to say goodnight to her. She had been acting funny these last few weeks and he wanted to get to the bottom of it. She had a book open on her lap but she wasn't reading it, instead she was looking outside the window and sighing.
Tenzin clears his throat to get Jinora's attention, "Can I come in?"
"Of course daddy."
"Jinora, is everything okay?" he asked as he sat down on her bed.
"Why would you ask that? I'm okay." she said quickly.
"Well, no not really. Is it that obvious?" she said her head down.
"It's obvious to those who know you that something is wrong. Jinora what's wrong? Whatever is bothering you, is making you sad."
She looked straight into his eyes, "Dad how did you know you were in love with mom?" He nearly fell out of the bed by shock of the question, he didn't expect his little girl to be in love. She's so young she can't be in love, but then a little voice in the back of his mind reminded him, you were six when you fell for Lin. He brushed the thought away and looked at Jinora who was looking at him begging for some answers.
"Well...um...I think you should have this conversation with your mother." he muttered.
"I already know that mom confessed to you dad and that's why you're together with her now." she huffed.
"I just can't do it and I don't even know if I like him." she said frustrated.
He had so many questions running in his mind, who was this boy and when did they meet but looking back at his sad daughter who now looked down at her hands and her shoulders were hunched over.
He put his arm on her shoulder and said, "Jinora I wish I knew what to say, love has many emotions."
"Love is commitment, respect, loyalty and friendship. But love has a dark side too it's like a need or an addiction." he said.
"Dad is that what you felt with mom?" Jinora asked a little surprised.
He frowned now and shaking his head as he was thinking, "I only knew your mom would be a great mother. Jinora I don't know what to say." but then he continued.
"I didn't realize I was in love it sneaked up on me, all I knew was I lived for her smiles and her presence. That was the worst part was waiting for her to show up. I had to wait until her mother would drop her off and then I got to see her and play with her." he said reminiscing. Jinora was a little confused now she was thinking of her mother's stories, but she didn't remember her dad meeting her mom when she was young.
"We were always together, but that's how I wanted it to be I felt that I couldn't live without her. She was my partner in crime and we would do everything together. I felt like my love got stronger over the years for her. I finally did get the courage to kiss her to which she blushed and punched my arm afterwards." he laughed to himself.
"When it ended, because it had to end it felt like hell, like I was on fire." he sighed.
"I hope you don't rush into it Jinora, love is such a strong emotion but it is also the most wonderful one." he said.
"Dad you really loved Lin didn't you." she asked innocently.
He started to fidget now when he realized that this whole time he was talking about Lin. "I'm sorry Jinora." he said guilty.
"Don't worry dad it's our secret. I just hope that I can feel the same way about someone like that one day. But don't worry not today, I need to get to know him a little more." she said.
"I want to get to know him to." he said.
"Okay dad, night."
"Night" and he kissed her on her forehead.
