California- By Ms. Caitlin Rose

It all started with a bottle of wine and a silly game.

Never Have I Ever, to be exact.

The resident annoyingly cute couple of Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters was lying on Jubilee's bed, teasing and tricking each other as they passed the bottle of white wine back and forth. The bottle was finished much sooner than either of them expected, so they curled into each other, chatting quietly.

"If you could do anything in the world right now, what would it be?" John asked his rather tipsy girlfriend. She mused quietly for a few minutes before answering.

"California. I miss California. I wanna go back for a visit... This is great an' all, but Beverly Hills will always be my home, y'know?"

She rambled on, talking about the beach and her school and the mall- GOD, the MALL. Her babbling covered the fact that John was quiet, all her talk about 'home' stirring up some rather unwanted memories. She'd noticed, after a few minutes had elapsed.

"Johnny? Y'okay?" she asked quietly.

"Fine," he murmured, not taking his eyes off the ceiling.

"I know when you're not... What's the matter?"

"'M fine," he insisted.

"Jus' tell me, wouldja?" Jubilee was sitting straight up on the bed now, looking at him. He sat up as well and rubbed a hand over his face.

"Has the thought that I don't wanna talk about it occurred to you?"

Jubilee was slightly taken aback at his hostile reaction. She rested a hand on his shoulder, with him shrugging it off almost immediately.

"I'm sorry... I jus' want you ta be able ta talk ta me."

"I will when I want," he snapped. "You heard what I said, what don't you get about it?" He climbed off the bed and began walking away from her. Ever the stubborn one, she followed him.

"I don't get why all of a sudden you're like this. We were jus' fine an' now you're kinda bein' an ass."

John stopped suddenly as turned sharply to face her. She collided with his front because of his abrupt turn.

"Will you just shut up?" he shouted in her face. "You're just babblin' away. Can't you keep your damn mouth closed for once, and stop trying to pry every little thing outta me?"

Her jaw dropped. "I- no. You do NOTget ta talk ta me like that. How dare you? I- you need ta get out. Now." He stepped forward, forcing her backwards.

"I'll say whatever the hell I want to, you got that?"

Jubilee began shaking and glared right back at him. "NOT TA ME. You get out, go away!"

He scowled at her and turned to leave, but grabbed a photo frame off of her dresser and chucked it. Jubilee flinched even though the frame missed her by a few feet. John glared at her once more before storming out. She bolted after him, slamming the door shut and locking it behind him.

She held back her tears and began packing. California, here I come...
