Inspired by "Chip off the Old Block" by IMA Robot. Truth be told, I think Mai and Zuko are totally perfect for each other.
I don't own Avatar.
I don't own IMA Robot lyrics.
The end.
--
I wanted to be you,
dirty like the
You live in space,
your life's a waste,
like mine.So let's just stop, before we die.I know you don't care at all.
But what if right before the end, we quit?
Let's try, and what if they're right?
And it's darkness before the light?
Come on tell me your truth,
'cause you see, I told you mine.
Oh, lets just stop, before we die.

The palace ground were so breath taking at sunset. The deep reds and browns of the buildings glowed in the faded, burnt light. The trees, with scarcely a few leaves left, cast large, dramatic shadows across the scene.
Truly, it was beautiful.
Truly, Zuko and Mai didn't care.
Hand in hand, the pair wandered around outside the palace walls. They both wanted to escape the confines of a roof for awhile.
"This is so boring," Mai said dully. She allowed her sharpened fingernail to trace the intricacies of the brick on a nearby wall. "Why'd we come out here anyway?"
"We didn't want to be inside," Zuko explained in his usual deep, profound mumble. "Do you want to go back in?"
Mai bit her lower lip in thought. "Hmm. No."
"Okay."
They walked in silence for quite a time. The only sound to be heard was the hearty crunch of dead leaves beneath their feet. An icy wind eventually picked up and Mai released Zuko's hands so she could defend herself from the chill. Despite the mess of fabric that she wore draped over her body, she could still feel the bite of the cold. Zuko noticed a small shiver echo off of her frame. "You're cold," he said. It was more of a statement than a question. Mai replied with an awkward shrug combined with a nod of her head. Zuko, with as much tenderness as he could muster, wrapped his arm around her shoulder and squeezed it affectionately. He sucked a deep breath into his lungs and proceeded to lightly exhale the air onto Mai's neck and shoulders. "Your breath, it's warm," she commented. "I know," Zuko muttered as he repeated the process. Mai slowed her pace to a complete stop. Zuko, following suit, did the same. She rested her palm on his cheek as a small smile tugged at one side of her mouth. It was the closest look of happiness she had reached in a long time. Zuko mirrored the expression, with only one corner of his mouth turned upward. The hardness on his facial features softened, and almost completely disappeared.
"Let's walk over there now," Mai said abruptly. And with that, her mask of indifference reappeared and Zuko's grimace settled back on his face.
Zuko complied. "Okay."
Mai's palm shifted down back to her side and Zuko claimed it in his grasp. The couple walked the grounds until the moon had totally taken over the sky.
