Watching

By: Crystal

Summary: Gin watches Matsumoto sleep, knowing that tomorrow they'll be fighting against each other as the Winter War is dawning. Gin's POV. Drabble. Gin x Rangiku

Disclaimer: I don't own Bleach.

Not even Aizen knew I came here on some nights.

Hell, I don't think anyone knows I've been doing this, coming here at night, pretty much since we'd become Soul Reapers together. It's actually one of my favorite hobbies, actually, watching you sleep.

Rangiku-chan.

Did you know you talk in your sleep? It's somewhat entertaining, listening to you babble about 'lazy Haineko' and your 'bossy, short Captain'. Sometimes you even call out my name as you sleep. One time, I remember I was sitting next to you, on the chair beside your bed, when you suddenly cried my name and your arm shot out, hand almost touching my hakama.

You had nearly given me a heart attack. I thought you were actually awake, but then you turned on your side, snoring.

You've been saying my name more often in your sleep lately.

Ever since the betrayal. I reach out, hand stroking the tangles of your long, reddish-orange hair, softly humming a lullaby. I know you can't hear me. You've always been a hard sleeper.

I recall that last meeting of ours.

You grab my wrist, place the blade of Haineko at my throat, and order, "Don't move!" Hearing your voice, I crane my neck, smile playfully at you, grin at Aizen, waving apologetically while he is sending death-glares at me, "Sorry, Cap'n Aizen! She got me!"

He snorts at this, eyes on the purple-haired woman who was holding onto his arm, twisting it painfully behind his back so he couldn't grab his sword, as she is saying, "This is the end, Aizen."

Lady, you don't know how wrong you are.

"What did you say?" Aizen asks coolly. The purple-haired woman smiles, "Don't you sense it Aizen? You're completely surrounded."

As soon as she says this, dark shapes appear in the corner of my eyes, the Shunpo almost too fast to see, and I realize it's our Shinigami ex-allies. Aizen eyes widen, and then he grins. The purple-headed woman's eyes widen, "Soi Fon! Get away!" The two girls jump away, just as a golden beam of light shoots downward, encompassing him.

I watch with vague interest as a huge hand rips open the sky.

It's time to go. Menos Grande appear from the tear as two additional beams of light shoot down, surrounding me and Tousen. Hisagi, who's guarding Tousen, leaps away.

I jerk my hand away suddenly, wrenching it out of your grip, watching as you stumble backwards, a spark of hurt appearing in your pretty, ice-blue eyes. The earth underneath me trembles and starts rising into the air.

I look down at you, a sad smile on my face, and say what I know will probably be my last words to you, "Goodbye, Rangiku-chan. I only wish my capture could've lasted a little longer."

The earth beneath my feet is rising higher now.

"I'm sorry."

I hope you know that I wasn't lying to you. I really did regret it, leaving you behind. I slid open your window, crawled through it, and jumped out, landing softly on the grass below. I gaze back up at your second-story window, half-expectant and also half-wistful, thinking about what could have been.

But what could probably never be.

"I'm sorry."

It's not going to be the last time seeing you. I'll see you tomorrow, on the battlefield.

So until then, sleep well; goodnight an' don't let the bedbugs bite.

I love you.

Crystal: Okays! That was fun! I love this pairing so much and if Tite Kubo kills off Gin and he doesn't die in Matsumoto's arms…unstealths Zanpakto Let's not get into gory details, okay? It's better that way, ^.^!

Until then, adieu!
