Liz and Jack strolled into his office, fresh from their meeting with Wienerslav. There was no sense in not doing this right away.
Jack retrieved some papers from his desk, arrayed them out on the coffee table, and sat down opposite Liz, handing her a pen.
"Jack, how come you didn't just get it annulled? It's not like this marriage was consummated."
"Wasn't it?"
"Uh... what?"
"Not in that sense, Lemon. But over the years you've been a partner to me in so many things, sometimes it's as if we've been married."
"So many things except..." Liz made some weird pointing-back-and-forth motion that Jack presumed was supposed to mean sex.
He nodded. "Like I said, it's like we've been married". That actually had never been his experience of married life, but it seemed like the right joke to make.
He paused. "Anyway, I didn't want to... erase... that history."
Liz's eyes smiled. "Oh Jack, that's so gayballs."
"Besides, a woman like you should have at least one official marriage under her belt by age 40. And best of all," as he adjusted the knot of his tie, "your second husband will have to work extra hard to live up the memory of your, uh, first one."
Liz rolled her eyes. As she picked up the pen to sign, Jack suddenly scooped up the papers.
He stood up. "You know what? Before signing this, let's go get some lunch, as husband and wife, for the first, and last, time."
As he finished, he offered the seated Liz his arm.
"Are you sure?"
"You ought to at least get lunch out of all this, Lemon."
Liz smiled at him, took his arm, and they strolled to the elevator. "Can we go to the new popcorn place?"
Jack just smiled.
