Walter lay in bed, restless. His mind was racing, it had been a long day, and was turning into a longer night. No matter what he did, he couldn't seem to stop his thoughts from racing long enough for him to sleep.
Her gentle breathing made him pause. The slow in, out rhythm calmed his thoughts and helped him focus in a way nothing else had. How many nights had they spent like this? It had started so innocently, and now was just a matter of habit than anything else.
Her small hand reached out, a sudden jerk in her nighttime slumbers. But when her hand touched his, as if on instinct, her fingers gently curled around his.
Walter looked over at his sleeping daughter. A smile spread across his face. He gave her a gentle kiss on the forehead, and she snuggled in closer to him.
Logic told him this was a bad habit. Children should sleep in their own beds. But Walter needed his baby girl beside him just as much as she needed his presence.
He squeezed her hand gently and slowly drifted off to sleep, listening to her slow, rhythmic breathing.
I wrote this in like 20 minutes. But a similar situation happened to me at work tonight and I just had to get it out there before I went insane. Because really, that little girl reaching out to hold my hand as she fell asleep nearly made my uterus explode. So please let me know if there are any stupid mistakes.
