"So this is it then?" Sasuke asked, as he sat in the long sun kissed grass beside Naruto. The breeze toyed with his bangs and made them obscure his ebony eyes. He didn't bother to push them away, because he was afraid of what Naruto might sense of his emotions if he did.
The two were seated high on the mountain cliff above Konoha, and the sun was just stretching across the last of the flowers, bidding them a fond farewell as it set.
"We're all going our separate ways... Just going to forget each other, now?" Sasuke looked down, and hated the audible change of tone in his voice. The audible sadness and regret.
A Ninja Must Never Show Emotion.
The golden haired boy turned to him, and smiled sadly, his blue eyes reflecting all the scarred and doomed emotions that Sasuke had predicted they would.
"I can't go back, now that they've allseen what I am, Sasuke." His face lost emotion and he stared, glazed, down at the tiny town they had once called their home. The place they had once called their home..When things were all right. "You've seen it for yourself, they won't accept me." He carefully wiped some blood from his beaten face.
A Ninja Must Do His Duty, No Matter the Cost.
"DAMN THEM!" Sasuke cried in frustration and agony, jumping up and scaring all the birds from the hill, ensuing in a cawing chorus of dismay. "You saved them!! You only used the full power of the kyuubi because their lives were in danger! If it hadn't been for you-.." His voice trailed off and he fell with a thunk back into a sitting position beside his friend.
"You saved me too and I don't hate you! Why does it have to be this way!?" He shook his head, causing the tears coursing down his face to fly into the air, sparkling for a mere moment before plitting to the ground.
Quietly and with infinite care, Naruto reached over to his friend and softly dried his tears.
"Because this is the way life is, Uchiha."
A Ninja Must Sacrifice Himself To Save Others.
Sasuke turned away in disgust, angry with himself for breaking and crying in front of his once hated friend. He bit his lower lip and pulled himself back together, slapping the Uchiha patented glare and cold frown on his face.
"This isn't the way it is!" He gritted his teeth, and took Naruto's arm. "You don't have to go!"
Filled with a soft sorrow and a deep burden, Naruto looked down on Sasuke, and at once Sasuke knew there was no swaying him.
A Ninja Must Believe In What He Knows.
The fox boy stood up, and walked to the edge of the cliff, staring at the new stars as they slowly sparkled a bit brighter.
"I'm going to miss you when I'm gone."
Sasuke got up and turned, walking down the hill. He couldn't make himself answer back.
As the moon rose, Naruto looked down once more at the town he had known for so long, and faces and memories flashed in his mind. Most of them warm, some of them cold, he cherished them all, no matter how far back they seemed.
When the moon was at its peek, it palely silhouetted Naruto's brave and lonely frame on the hill and Sasuke turned for one last look.
As the stars twinkled and the grass whispered softly in the wind, tears ran down Sasuke's features.
And Naruto jumped.
All Ninja Must be Remembered.
