Checkmate: a Death Note story

As confirmed by L, Light Yagami is a sore loser.

Light is a genius, there's no way to deny that fact. But is it good to win over and over?

Is that really okay? It isn't. Always being the winner has turned him into a greedy, if not immature, kind of person. The greed of winning. The desire of always being the victor...

The first time we see this greed, iss in a chess tournament in middle school.

For every victory, a price must be paid...

Yagami had already taken part several times, winning from everyone and thus taking the cup for his school. He had become (in)famous as the Chessmaster. Due to this fame and the fact he had never lost, Light got used to winning the competition. And this is what happened, when he got his greed take the best of him!

Waved at by their classmates, the chessteam of Osamu Middle School got into the cars (Toyota Urban Cruisers, if you wish to know).

'Well then, Light, ready to kick their asses?' Makoto, one of his companions, asked.

'Yeah, yeah... of course I am.' Light answered, bored. He nearly got angry. Why did that prick even thought of asking him? He won every year, of course he was ready! He didn't have much respect for the other contestants of his school. They talked big, but had always failed to make it to the final. That had to be because they were unable to win from the others. If they were able to get to the final, they would have to battle him. His companions had never made it further than the quarter-final. Pointless...

'Hey, Light! Are you even listening to me?' Makoto shouted.

'Huh? Oh, sorry, Makoto. What is it?'

'I was asking if you had already seen the other contestants. Here, take a look.'

He gave Light a list of contestants. It was splitted into several groups. Each school had its own group. At his school, for example, the following names were listed:

Makoto Haichi

Ren Haro

Light Yagami

Maki Shinichi

Maki was, as always, the only girl in their team. This was the third time their school was competing. All those times, Light had made them winners. That's why their team was always the same.

Never change a winning team...

Light was now reading the names of the other school's team members. Most of them were the same as previous years. Only a few schools were sending new contestants, probably in a desperate attempt to win. Nothing interesting... if it weren't for the honor of winning, one would think of stop competing! But that wasn't Lights style. He would go on, no matter what!

'So, whaddaya think? Not many new guys, huh?' Makoto asked, receiving the list from Light.

'No, not really. This is getting quite dull, don't you think?'

'Dull? Are you crazy? You should be happy! That way we will always be the winner! Or rather, you would be.'

Light smiled. Makoto had a point. Why complain about the tournament or it's contestants? Yet again, he was ging to defend his title. At this rate, he was going to be the winner.. victory was going to be his..

This is only a pilot! I wrote it this evening 'cause I was bored...
