Jake Barton had never had a father. Not a proper father, at least. His dad had left when he was the tender age of four- the memories he had of him was being tossed into the air, squealing in his high-pitched, little boy laugh. He hadn't stuck around to watch Jake or his little brother, Alex, grow up.
For over twenty years, it had been their mother with two boys. When Jake was a teenager, he questioned his mother, whether or not she hated his father. Grace had smiled wistfully, kissed his cheek and told him she didn't.
"He gave me you boys, Jake. I could never hate him".
Grace had told him that every time he had asked.
But he knew she was lying. His father, sure, had given Grace two boys, but he hadn't stuck around. Instead, he left her to raise their sons, taking off without a care in the world. In primary school, one of his friend's only lived with his mother, as well. But he got to visit his father on weekends and stay there for the school holidays- hell, he was even sent birthday and Christmas presents!
Jake didn't care about the presents. He cared about his mum, he cared for her. She never dated; she told both him and Alex that she needed to spend time with her boys.
But that had been years ago. They were both fully grown adults now. Jake had a wonderful girlfriend, and Alex spent his time working, hoping to return to New Zealand with his friends.
And Grace had started to date. A man called Doug, supposedly he was very nice.
That's what they were told.
"Don't be ridiculous, Jake", Rachel had scoffed, when he started to get a little too overprotective. "She's your mum, she's not going to do something stupid".
"Exactly! She's my mum, she's MY mum! I don't want her going off with some guy that I've never met!"
"There's got to be something wrong with you, babe". Rachel had smacked his chest. "Most guys would want their mothers to be happy!"
"Yeah, I want her to be happy, it doesn't mean I want her to be with some guy!"
And he hadn't even met him.
Jake wanted his mother to be happy- but he didn't want to share her. For over twenty years, it had just been Grace and the boys.
And he wanted it to stay that way.
