Charlie ran to close the door. If he was gonna die it'll be only him, Desmond deserves to live. The door banged shut, echoing through the whole hatch. Desmond tried to open the door but Charlie ensured that it would stay closed. Charlie turned around and watched the glass window shatter. The water rushed in and he knew that he had to warn everyone that the people on the boat weren't who they said they were. He grabbed the marker that was in his pocket and wrote on his hand in big, bold letters "NOT PENNYS BOAT". Desmond read the message and nodded, displaying that he understood. Charlie knew he couldn't hold on much longer, he stopped holding his breath and a thought blew through his mind. "What about Claire? She better get home with Aaron." That's all he wanted, to save Claire and Aaron. They have become his family and he has to protect them.

Almost an hour later, Desmond came back to the island to tell everyone that it wasn't Penny's boat. Claire caught sight of Desmond and looked for Charlie but he was nowhere to be seen. Hurley walked up to her, tears welling in his eyes. "He's dead...Charlie's dead." he whispered, tears now actively running down his face. "How? How did he?" Claire managed to choke out before her voice broke. "He was trying to save us" Hurley answered simply. Claire nodded, straightening the baby in her arms and embracing Hurley in a hug. They both cried and Claire remembered the day she slapped Charlie and the day he gave her peanut butter. Everything came rushing back and she wished she could have stopped him from going down there. "I'll never forget you Charlie, It should have been me..." she thought, sobbing.
