"Orion has been staring at us for the past half hour," Walburga whispers, scowling when Druella glances his way. "Dru! Don't be so obvious."
Druella smirks, tossing her blonde hair back. "Why not? He should know that we are two available young women."
"I thought you only had eyes for Abraxas."
Walburga tries not to be jealous. Druella is gorgeous. She's always been the pretty one. Walburga has always felt inferior to her, and maybe she hates herself for it since Druella is her best friend.
"Orion is walking over," Druella whispers.
Walburga looks up. Sure enough, he moves closer, his grey eyes fixed upon them. Walburga shifts nervously. It's ridiculous to think that he could be looking at her. She is average with her dark hair and eyes to match. Of course he would be looking at Druella.
It's the way all these little gatherings go, after all. Boys stare Druella. Druella stares at Abraxas. Walburga stands in the shadows and sips her pumpkin juice.
"Good evening," Orion says, coming to a stop.
"Hello, Orion," Druella says as Walburga offers him a nod of acknowledgement.
"Would you like to dance?"
Walburga doesn't know why Druella is so quiet. After all, even if she has no intention of pursuing them, Druella loves the chase, the game.
"He means you, Walburga," Druella hisses quietly.
"Me?"
Orion laughs, but it isn't a cruel sound. He seems genuinely amused that she doesn't realize he would want to ask her. "Of course I mean you," he says, offering her his hand.
Walburga takes a deep breath. She's never really danced at these things. She's never had the opportunity.
Her hand tremble as her fingers lock with his. Her stomach feels as though she's swallowed butterflies.
Druella takes her goblet with a grin. "I'll hold this. I believe you'll need both hands," she teases.
Walburga looks at her best friend, eyes wide. She wishes she could find a way for Druella to tell her what to do, but she's swept away before she has a chance to ask for guidance.
"I have wanted to ask you to dance all night," Orion tells her as they begin to move with the music.
He is so graceful. She is anything but. Still, as he leads her along with a gentle skill, Walburga feels herself smiling.
"What took you so long?" she asks, and she hates how blunt it sounds; Druella would make it sound flirtatious.
Somehow, Orion is not put off. He only smiles at her as though she's said something funny. "You are intimidating," he answers. "So cold and above it all. I thought you'd laugh in my face."
Cold and above it all. Walburga doesn't thinking that she's these things. Truthfully, she's simply nervous and maybe a touch abrasive. She forces a smile. Let him think it was her plan all along. "Well, it took you long enough, Orion," she says coolly. "It's rude to keep a lady waiting."
With a grin he spins her around before pulling her closer. "I will try to do better," he chuckles.
Walburga feels her cheeks warm with color. Her head seems to spin which every dip and turn, and she is so painfully aware of how close Orion is to her.
"I'd like to dance all night," she whispers, smiling to herself.
Orion leans in, pressing a chaste kiss to her forehead. "Then your wish is my command."
