Disclaimer: I don't own Trudy or Adrian (or) (Monk)
Trudy looked at Adrian her eyes narrowed in annoyance.
"Adrian," she said calmly, "I love you but I was rather annoyed with how insensitive you were towards my friend today"
"Honey I had to do it," he explained
"Well… that's debatable," she said, "and beside the point. You didn't have to be rude and insensitive about it"
"I wasn't rude or insensitive"
Trudy took a deep breath in order to keep herself from shouting.
"You said she was a disgrace to order"
"She was wearing mismatched socks and her shirt was missing a button"
"That's not exactly an offense," she said, "and that doesn't mean that she's a disgrace to order"
He couldn't argue there. She was right.
"May I ask you a question," she asked.
"I think you just did," he teased
"Adrian… if it had been me in that situation would you have acted the same way that you did towards my friend?"
"I- I mean- um… you know I wouldn't… you know I couldn't."
"So what made you decide to act that way towards my friend especially knowing that she's going through a tough- Adrian why on earth are you crying"
"I'm crying because I hate it when we fight," he said
"This isn't a fight," she told him looking at him strangely
"You're upset with me-"
"No," she told him firmly, "I'm upset with your behavior. There is a huge difference between you and your behavior."
"I get nervous around disorder," he said, "and I don't know how to handle it."
"Adrian," she told him, "I'm going to show you a little trick. Any time there is a situation like that and you don't know how to handle it ask yourself 3 things"
"What are those things," he asked
"1," she began, "is this destructive? Now honestly Adrian is a pair of mismatched sock destructive?"
"No… even though it should be"
"2," she continued, "is it really something that is needs to be done and 3 is this a healthy thing you're doing
"If the answer to any of those questions is yes then you do what you have to do. If you doubt anything follow your instincts. If the answer to all of those questions is no, excuse the pun but remain silent"
He laughed
"Never say anything," she continued, "that you can use against yourself when you look back"
"How did you get to be so smart," he asked her
"I learned it from you," she told him kissing him
