Disclaimer: If you recognise it I don't own it :p

This is my second RL/SB fic, which came to me when I was listening to Demons by Imagine Dragons (You will notice just how many references to that song are in here if you listen to it! I basically storyfied the song :p) So I hope you like it! I'm possibly gonna add more chapters if you like it!

PS Storyfied is a word because I say so

It was a cold, crisp March day, and Remus Lupin was building a card tower in the Gryffindor common room. For once, he had absolutely no homework or extra credit work to do, and no novels to read. It was a depressing thought. His card tower was reaching six levels high and he was just finishing the second last row, when a loud noise almost caused him to knock the whole thing over. The portrait hole opened up, and somebody stumbled in.

The spring sunlight shone through the window and targeted this new arrival. His shaggy black hair was bleached to a bright gold in the glare of the natural spotlight, and his huge, rakish grin was a whole different kind of glow. He was beautiful. Remus shook his head to clear away all thoughts of this nature. His dreams would fail him. They always did. He was lucky to have the friends he had – they accepted him for who and what he was, and still loved him in spite of having previously seen him whimpering and cowering in a corner covered in the stale blood of his latest kill. No, he had used up his luck quota in securing a place at Hogwarts and gaining such loyal friends; it was very unlikely he'd be lucky in love as well.

Sirius was closely followed by his other friends, laughing and shoving into each other, they all pulled up chairs next to Remus, and in a flurry of snorts and interrupted sentences, they regaled their latest prank to Remus. As usual it had involved a well-placed jinx and a very disgruntled Severus Snape. Remus chuckled to himself.

"You said you were doing homework Remus," Sirius whined, "This isn't homework!" He flicked at the centre card at the bottom of the tower, and the whole structured folded in on itself. Remus rolled his eyes in exasperation and gathered all the cards up into a pile.

"I finished the homework, and decided to take advantage of the peace and quiet". He tapped the edges of his pack of cards against the table, knocking them into a neat block and sliding them back into their box. He wished it was as easy to pack up his 'furry little problem' and hide it away from his friends, to protect them from the repercussions. He wished he could shelter them from the animalistic part of himself that lurked even when the moon wasn't full. But of course, it was inside of him, short of alienating himself from his friends, there was nothing he could do. Nowhere they could hide.

Remus of course, was still too human for alienating himself to be a feasible option. Greed is an essential part of human nature after all. Greed and jealousy. Remus's friends would live fulfilling lives, get married, and have children. Remus however was destined for loneliness. It was his kingdom come; inevitable. He could never make someone else live with his demons; it would be too selfish.

He stopped himself from thinking such depressing thoughts. He needed to live in the here and now; make the most of his luck while it lasted. But in the here and now was the beautiful boy sitting across from him, sweeping his unruly locks from his startlingly grey eyes. He wanted to be closer to him, to run his fingers through his hair, but he could never make eye contact. If he made eye contact, Sirius might look past him into his very soul. He might see the demons. No, he couldn't get too close.

Constructive criticism is fab, but flames will just be used to toast marshmallows.
