Metamorphosis
Author's Note: This is my first attempt at writing a Percy Jackson fic, although it is one of the fandoms that I often read stories in. Luke is not my favorite character, but I find him fascinating anyways, so I decided to write this. Feedback would really be appreciated!
Disclaimer: If I owned Percy Jackson, I wouldn't be writing fanfiction about it, would I?
Luke didn't know exactly when he started to change. It could have started as early as when his father left him and his mother. Maybe it was when his mom's fits, with her horrible glowing green eyes and rasping voice, became enough to make him leave. Maybe it was when he met Thaila and then Annabeth, and discovered he wasn't the only one that had been abandoned.
Perhaps what changed him so much was the day when Thaila stood on the hill, facing an army of Hades' worst creatures, and Zeus, the great Olympian God, offered no help but turning his daughter into a pine tree.
He might have gone over to Kronos because of the sight of the Hermes cabin every night, packed with campers deemed too unimportant to claim. It grew so depressing after a while, seeing the faces of kids who didn't expect they'd ever be told whom their immortal parent was.
Luke supposed, though, that it was the combination of these events that made him choose to aid Kronos. Without one, maybe, he would have remained on the side of the Gods. But when he looked at all that the Gods had done, the right choice was obvious.
Luke didn't know exactly when he started to change. It could have started as early as when he learned that Annabeth would not be joining him. Maybe it was when Kronos wanted to bring Thaila back, but only to use her. Maybe it was when he saw the way Kronos treated those who chose to follow him; nearly the same way he acted towards his enemies.
Perhaps what changed him so much was the day when Kronos demanded the use of his body and mind, leaving him with no way of backing down, no option other than to completely give himself over.
He might have chosen help the Gods because of the sight of Ethan attempting to stab Kronos, making his decision. If Ethan could do it, if he knew it was the right thing to do, why couldn't he?
