It started out as just another ordinary day for Arthur Dent, so it figures that it would have to be a Thursday. He never could get the hang of Thursdays. By a very odd co-incidence, this Thursday was exactly forty-two weeks before the end of the world. Around teatime, Arthur realized that he had no food. He went to the local grocery store to buy all the usual things –eggs, milk, bread, tea, etc.
After he found everything he needed, Arthur went to the counter to pay for it. The cashier smiled and asked him if he would like to donate a few pence to the Alzheimer's Society. Feeling generous, Arthur put not just a few pence, but a five pound note, in the box.
A few minutes and two items later, the cashier looked up at him, smiled, and asked him if he would like to donate a few shillings to the Alzheimer's Society. Still feeling generous, Arthur put another fiver in the box. Five minutes and three items later, the cashier smiled and again asked him if he would like to donate some money to the Alzheimer's Society. Arthur was starting to wonder if this was some kind of joke, but, feeling slightly guilty, he tossed a single shilling in the box, he decided that this time would be the last time.
Ten minutes and about thirty quid later, Arthur had finally had enough. He said no, however, the cashier had managed to con him out of another five shillings first. He paid for his purchases and found that he had enough money to buy everything…except tea. He was finished buying everything and walking out of the store when the cashier called out to him,
"Would you like to donate some money to the Alzheimer's Society?"
(Author's Note: This could only happen to Arthur Dent. Please review it, I will not update any of my fanfics unless I get at least five more reviews in any one of them. Reviewers get cake! I know it's short, but still...)
