Showdown at Doose's
"The names Will Danes," he said, holding out his hand. I eyed it cautiously, wondering where this young man had suddenly appeared from. I had been checking things in the Market and rounded a corner to find myself face to face with the Danes boy. I didn't want to know what sort of trouble he was getting himself into now.
"I know what your name is," I snapped. "I've known you since you were born, young man. Now, if you would, kindly move out of my way." My request went unanswered save for a cheeky grin growing on the boy's face. He lowered his hand, but didn't move.
"C'mon, Taylor," he said, still grinning. "Play along! I'm practicing for when I'm famous like Aunt Lane and Uncle Zack."
"Yes, that's very nice," I said, not bothering to point out that Lane and Zack were not, technically, his Aunt and Uncle. "Now, I must be on my way, young man."
"Kwan told me you only say 'young man' when you're annoyed," the boy replied, changing the subject the same way his mother always does. "Are you annoyed, Taylor?" And there was a bit of his father coming out there, too. I took a deep breath.
"No, William, I'm not annoyed," I said. "I do, however, need to get on with my work. May I please get past you?" His grin grew, if that was even possible.
"All you had to do was say 'please,'" he said, and with a laugh he turned and ran out of the store. I saw Kwan and Steve, Lane and Zack's pesky children, pop up from behind a fruit stand and join William as he raced towards the gazebo.
I sighed. Those children took after their parents far too much, if you ask me.
