Chapter 1
Rapunzel
Our wedding day was perfect. The sun was shining in the cerulean sky and there wasn't a single cloud. I was so nervous when I was getting ready because the weather predictor in our village had predicted that it was going to be a cold, rainy day. Remind me to never believe that guy again! I smile as I remember when Pascal and Maximus somehow got themselves covered in… some liquid when they gave me us the rings. I remember that sweet kiss that marked me and Eugene as husband and wife, and how the cake magically disappeared. Who knows where that thing went! I lean on the railing of the mini balcony in our honeymoon resort, which of course was my tower, and smile happily as the memories of yesterday came flowing back. I stay, daydreaming until the sun starts to go down. Pascal chitters into my ear that I have to get ready for bed.
" I know, I know, Pascal! Stop rushing me, you little monster!" I chuckle and stroke him under his neck. I slip into my nightgown, making a lovely shuffling sound as the silk comes over my body. I'm about to reach for my hairbrush when I remember that my hair was mostly gone. Scenes of Mother Gothel with a knife, Eugene groaning in pain, and me screaming in despair flash across my mind. I drop my hairbrush, breathing heavily. Eugene lightly taps me on my shoulder.
" Rapunzel? Are you okay?" He asks, his face crinkled with worry. I shake my head to brush the memory off.
" Yeah, I'm fine, just some bad memories," I reply. Eugene's face softens. Then he kisses me on the forehead and whispers good night and heads off to his bedroom. I smile, warmth spreading through my heart. So this is what it feels like to be married I think. I beckon Pascal to come and he hops onto my shoulder. Yawning, I head to my room, place Pascal on his little pedestal, and get into the light, satin bed covers. I fall asleep, staring at the sun fairies on the ceiling dance.
I wake up to hear a thump and then a burst of magenta light. Surprised, I bolt out of my bed and poke Pascal.
"Wake up Pascal," I hissed, and he yawns and slowly opens his eyes as he smacks his lips. I hastily place him on my shoulder, where he promptly falls asleep again. I tiptoe down the stairs which makes a disturbing creek sound and find the only thing I can see are blue and purple lights peeking out of the teal closet I had once stuffed Eugene into. A humorous memory pops into my mind, but is soon gone. I creep up to the closet, and suddenly I bump into an object. I shriek, and the object shrieks after hearing me shriek. I hear the object (Cat? Monster? Water Buffalo?) shuffle to a candle and lights it. It's only Eugene. I sigh with relief.
"Rapunzel what are you doing here?" He asks, obviously still in shock.
"I heard a thump and saw a faint light," I say in a small voice. He strokes my brunette hair lovingly and we both slowly approach the closet. I press my ear against the door, and I hear whooshes and whispers of no voice inside. I don't think there's an open window in there. Eugene glances towards me, fear in his eyes, and holds up his fingers. 3,2,1. He pulls the doors open and they slam against the sides of the furniture piece. The brilliant light and wind pulls Eugene and me inside the portal.
