Emma and David were investigating a 10-31, "suspicious person," outside of Storybrooke Middle.
Sleepy had called it in, saying there was a shadowy figure lurking outside the windows of the gymnasium, where the eighth graders were having their annual Spring Fling Dance. Henry and Violet were among them.
It was for that reason that Emma found it unsurprising that the 'shadowy figure' she discovered in the headlights of the cruiser as she pulled into the parking lot was wearing a sensible pantsuit, boots, and a black trench coat.
"Are you going to arrest her or shall I?" David smirked beside her.
"I got this," Emma said, pushing the door open.
Regina had ducked into some nearby bushes. Emma approached slowly, her arms folded across her chest, watching the older woman pretend to look for something.
"Regina, what are you doing?" She asked.
"I lost something here when I dropped Henry off and I was looking for it," the brunette replied.
"In the bushes?" Emma asked, quirking an eyebrow.
"Yes."
"You were spying on Henry," Emma said, matter-of-factly.
Regina met the blonde's skeptical gaze.
"I was not – How dare you insinuate that I would – You really –" Emma shot her a knowing look. "Fine, I was spying on Henry."
"Why?"
"I don't trust that girl. She seems like she's up to something."
"She's thirteen."
"Thirteen is a dangerous age. And what are you doing here? How do I know you weren't checking up on them?"
"I was checking up on you. Sleepy called the station and said there was a stalker outside of the middle school," Emma scoffed.
"I'm not a stalker. I'm..."
"An overly-concerned mother who needs to let her kid live a little," the blonde interrupted.
The mayor huffed and folded her arms, but didn't argue.
"Regina, I know it's hard letting go, but he's a good kid. I'm sure they're just going to dance and drink punch and tell each other stupid jokes," Emma added.
"I suppose you're right."
"I am right."
"I just – worry about him," Regina said, sadly.
"I know, and that's okay, but be worried about him at home and not in the bushes outside of his school. Why don't I give you a ride back?" Emma asked, nodding to the cruiser.
"No need. I think I could use a walk," she sighed, shoving both hands into the pockets of her coat.
"Well then I'll walk you home."
Regina furrowed her brows, shocked that Emma would want to walk her anywhere.
"Aren't you on duty?"
"You're technically in my custody as a suspicious person, so walking you home is part of that duty," Emma quipped.
This earned an eye roll from the brunette, who swung her arm out to dramatically gesture to the sidewalk.
"Lead the way, sheriff."
