Jungkook was not crazy about being a lifeguard. The chair he had to stay glued to was hard and made his ass hurt. The sun was harsh on this quiet Saturday morning and he could feel the sweat starting to drip down his back. He wished he wasn't working, but he needed the money for his dance classes and would have been a fool to pass up on this chance to make easy money. A natural athlete, he had no doubt he was capable of saving the life of some little kid or grandma if it came to it. But after spending two hours staring at the blue abyss that was the pool, he was itching for the chance to ditch his lifeguard gear and swim a few laps himself.
Taehyung happened to be in Busan on vacation with his family. Though he was happy with the little weight he had put on during the school year, his parents warned him it was a sign that he needed to get on top of exercising again. Taking their word to heart, Taehyung found himself at the community pool the next morning, ready to work a sweat. But to his surprise, the lifeguard had him sweating before he even got in the pool. Cute and buff, Taehyung was delighted to see such a handsome guy his age on duty. He hatched a plan to get to know him better. He would "suddenly" forget he can't swim after jumping into the deep end of the pool. There was no way Mr. Muscles could ignore him then.
As Jungkook almost dozed off staring into the distance, he suddenly saw someone running to the diving board. "Hey! No running! Slow down!" he yelled, followed by the shrill sound of his whistle. Taehyung smiled as he bounced twice on the diving board and cannon-balled into the empty deep end of the pool.
Taehyung stayed underwater and counted five beats before beginning his performance.
"Help!" he cried as he bobbed in and out of the water. "I can't swim! Help!" Jungkook was in disbelief that the tall guy could have been so irresponsible. Despite this, he immediately dived into the water like a torpedo as if it was the first time he had rescued someone. Although part of him was worried about a guest actually dying on his watch, the rational side of him was excited at the chance to swim a little as he rescued the idiot from the water.
As Jungkook got closer, he was surprised to see the man drowning was actually really handsome. Like, really handsome! His features, even though they were bugging out, were still clearly well-defined like a model's. There sure weren't guys who looked like that in Busan. And those lips… Jungkook pushed his blooming feelings of want to the back of his mind as he carried out his duty.
Jungkook grabbed and pulled the drowning swimmer up to the surface as he swam to shallow water. "Are you alright, sir?" asked Jungkook while trying not to sound judgemental. "For someone who says he can't swim, this guy sure knows how to use me as a flotation device…" he thought.
"Thank you so much, man! Oh, I almost died. It was awful!" said Taehyung dramatically.
"Please be careful next time and stay in the shallow area, okay?" asked Jungkook.
"Yes, absolutely," said Taehyung. "I wouldn't want to make you do CPR or anything on me," he said, instantly regretting what he said.
Jungkook looked back at him in disbelief. After an awkward silence, Taehyung decided he had no more dignity to lose.
"Can I get your number in case I need help next time?"
"No," said Jungkook, conflicted by how much he hated perverted customers with how much he loved that a good-looking dude would be interested in him.
As the lifeguard swam back to his position, his goggles slipped off the left side of his face.
Upon closer inspection, he saw the band that held the goggles together was cut on the left side, rendering them unwearable. Once he was on break he gathered the goggles and stuffed them in the bag of the guy who had almost drowned, with a note stuck on them saying: "Hey asshole, you owe me 16,500 won" followed by his signature and phone number.
