A short piece of Sam and Jack fluff. This could be a prologue to 'I am with you always' but you don't need to read that to enjoy this.
This One Moment in Time
General Jack O'Neill slowly woke up to the smell of strawberries and something tickling his face. He grinned when he saw the blonde hair from a one Colonel Samantha Carter that had ticked him. Jack lifted his hand up and slowly brushed the hair away from his face, relishing the softness of it against his hand. She was snuggled up next to him and he took a moment to study her. He always loved moments like this when she was asleep and he could just look at her. Through the years he had seen her asleep countless times. He'd seen her asleep off world on routine missions, when she was injured and once after he'd shot her twice with a zat, killing the entity inside of her and her body in the process. This though was the time he loved watching her the most.
When that super smart brain of hers was turned off and she was just his. No more rules or regulations stood in the way. His hand was playing with strands of her long blonde hair. He never totally understood what he had done in this life to deserve this beautiful woman. She was way way smarter then him and could probably have any man she wanted on the planet, and she had chosen him. He didn't know what she saw in him, but the only thing that mattered was that she did.
Jack slowly sat up on his elbow and leaned over to kiss her on the lips.
"Hmm hi Jack." She said not bothering to open her eyes as she kissed him back. There was so much emotion wrapped up in that word, all her feelings laid bare in it. But then again she'd been doing the same thing with 'sir' for years.
"Morning sleepy head. Time to greet the day!" He said grinning.
Sam opened her eyes and smiled at him.
He loved her smile as well, especially that one which was meant only for him.
"I'd rather stay here with you." She said running a hand through his short silver hair.
"Yeah sure ya betcha." Jack said.
"I love you Jack." Sam said her voice turning serious.
"I know." He said as he leaned down to kiss her lips again. "I love you too Sam." He said with equal seriousness.
He had denied his love for her for so long, stuffed it in a box and tucked it away in the far reaches of his heart. He had to do that, it was a survival tactic. He never would have gotten through those years when she was with Pete without it. He hadn't blamed her for wanting a life outside of the SGC, but he had been so close to losing her, she had been within months of the wedding. Oh sure he had wanted her to be happy and there had been the regs so he hadn't said anything to her. But slowly his heart had been dying inside. Thankfully all that was in the past now.
"Are you happy?" Jack asked in uncertainty.
"Oh yes." She said laying her head on his shoulder as his hand slipped around to cradle her shoulders.
"You know Jack for years I was jealous of Doctor Carter from the alternate universe." She said suddenly.
"Why?"
"Because she had you. She didn't have the military regulations standing in the way. And though I would never want to go through the pain that she went through, at least in the end she had had you all for a time. Jack if things had been different…we wouldn't have lost all those years." She said looking at him, regret plainly written in her eyes.
"We have each other now." Jack told her.
"Yes we do." Sam said with a small smile, content to just be with him.
They both knew the 'what ifs', and what 'may have beens' but in the end none of it mattered. All they had was this one moment in time, and who knew how long they would have it. Yes this one moment in time was enough, it had to be.
