He sees her.
He sees her standing on the edge of the school roof, bracing her body against the railing, her arms flung wide apart as if she is offering to embrace the wind. He sees her smiling and laughing at things he doesn't understand, her eyes wide and looking at the sky. He sees her as he has never seen her before - as a person he has never seen before in his entire life.
In only a moment he is wondering how he has managed to pretend that he has not seen her. She has been there, all along, by his side - and yet he has never recognized her, never acknowledged her presence or spoken her name. She has been there all along and he has never once seen her until this very moment.
He opens his mouth to speak her name and realizes - for the first time - that he is afraid to say it.
"Narumi-san?"
She is looking at him, now, and he turns his head away. "Ah?"
"I didn't hear you come up." She jumps from the ledge and brushes her hair from her face, her cheeks glowing. "Did you bring me lunch?"
"Ah." He gives her the box. "I did."
