"Yes. Yes… And who is this? Ma… What? Could you repeat that? Ok…"
Light paused to pull a slip of paper out of his pocket, trying to prepare for writing the name that was about to be recited to him. He took another minute or so to locate a pen, then quickly apologized to the speaker and began to jot down the name. "Yeah, I'll let him know. Thank you, bye." Examining the paper to make sure he had used correct spelling, he walked around the corner and coincidentally ran into Matsuda. "Oh, I'm sorry!" The man said quickly, brushing past Light in another attempt to continue on his way. Light dismissed the accident, then stopped and, recalling what he had set out to do in the first place, whirled around.
"Hey, hold on a second!" Matsuda stopped, turning his head and giving him a questioning look. Light glanced at the paper, then back to Matsuda, handing him the slip. "A lady named Madoka Shibuya called for you. Do you know her?" Matsuda's face flushed, and he took the paper with a sheepish grin. "Yeah, we just started going out."
"That's great." Completely enthusiastic. Not.
"I'll go call her back now…" Matsuda rushed to the phone, picking it up in a flourish and dialing the number swiftly, with the speed of someone who had obviously spent time memorizing the number. "Yes? Madoka, it's me!" He began brightly, immediately launching off with a cheery conversation. L glanced around the corner, muttering 'What an idiot' before continuing on.
"Wha…? Madoka, what's wrong? Are you alri-" Matsuda held the phone in disbelief, dropping it and rushing to grab his coat. "Something's wrong!" He yelled at Light, before vanishing out the door.
"Huh? Okay then…" Light rolled his eyes, then, noticing a scrap of paper on the ground, picked it up to find it was the paper he had handed to Matsuda, inscribed with his girlfriend's name. Wait a second… His eyes widened. This was a piece of the Death Note he kept in his pocket…
"My bad." He murmured, tucking the scrap into his pocket with a shrug.
It was too bad for Matsuda, though…
