As the TARDIS came to a sudden stop, Julia found herself almost flying into Donna. However, the Doctor, quick on his feet, managed to catch her and bring her in close. She became very aware of the subtle smell of oil or something from the machines. Finding her feet, she backed away, still not entirely sure of how she felt about him. Sure, she loved the adventure, but being so close to this man, whatever he was, made her feel like a little girl, clumsy and shy.
As she turned away, she noticed Donna had a smirk on her face. "What?"
"Oh, nothing," Donna chuckled, knowingly, which kind of irked Julia, just a little. She turned back to the Doctor, "where and when are we?"
"Well, we're in Gettysburg, VA" he said as the ground suddenly shook violently. "Care to guess when?"
"Not..." she didn't finish as he opened the door, revealing a field covered in blue and grey... and red.
"Yes," he said. "The bloodiest battle in the American Civil War."
"Why?" She knew they wouldn't be able to alter the course of history, so what possible reason could they have for coming here? As they walked into the woods, all of a sudden it became clear. "Is that a..."
"EXTERMINATE!"
"Yes, and we have got to stop them before they change the flow of time." The Doctor said, pulling his sonic screwdriver from his pocket. He quickly caught up to the Dalek and with a cheerful "Hello!" He was off jogging into the woods, away from the battle.
Julia and Donna followed, not about to let the Doctor go trouncing off on his own. As they lured the Dalek away, Julia could not help but smile to herself, that on one of the most traumatic days in history, the Doctor still found something to laugh at.
Suddenly, he stopped and she crashed into him, once again smelling oil and him. She looked up at him and saw a mischievous glint in his eye. "Oi! Dalek! Miss me? Well come and get me!"
Again he was off and running, only this time Julia knew where they were going... back to the TARDIS. The Doctor looked over his shoulder and motioned for the girls to stop. Never one to question his motives out loud, Julia stopped, with Donna at her side.
Soon, the Doctor was in the TARDIS, with the Dalek hot on his heels. As soon as the Dalek crossed the threshold, the TARDIS was gone, but it was back a second later, not a Dalek in sight. The Doctor stepped out, grinning from ear to ear.
Julia ran up to him, grabbing him in a giant hug. The Doctor turned her face to him, and kissed her, square on the lips. Shocked at first, she pulled back, and the Doctor smiled, sadly, as if remembering. Then, before she could, he pulled her back, kissing her harder this time, and she back. This time, when he pulled away, the grin was back. "What say we get out of here?"
