She stands with one hand holding the other wrist
against the line of her body
As if letting go of her hands would be
to let everything go.
Honey wisps of her short hair fall against her face
covering a little of it up and laying a shadow over the rest
Her mouth is locked into a stubborn line
but those sea-change eyes hold the promise of unshed tears.
She is fragile, I see suddenly, as fragile as I am
As if the wind could rise up against us,
and we would discover that we are only
thin pieces of paper, too easily tossed and tumbled about.
I want to tell her that we would be
stronger together, strong enough to take on the wind
But I know she would refuse
So I watch her watching the horizon
for a promise of a future that will never come.
