He sped onwards through the hot, desert sun baring down on him. He was thirsty for new gas and had been aching to park for some time, but he kept speeding onward to his goal. He never should have gone back to the city, but now that he'd realized his mistake, he'd let nothing keep him from returning home.

He could see the turn for Radiator Springs just up ahead when his engine sputtered. He grimaced both in embarrassment and painful fatigue. "No. Oh, no! Not now!" He slowed, but he kept going, determined to reach home. All the while, he hoped he wasn't too late and that Mater didn't already have a new hero.

Though almost empty, he kept going until he could go no further, and it was just as the last bit of his gas slipped out that Lightning heard humming. He looked to see Mater chugging toward him. "Mater!" he cried eagerly.

"Lightning," he was greeted with a huge smile, "I knew you'd come back!"

Lightning looked at his love in surprise. "How'd you know?" he asked.

"Simple," Mater answered, swinging his tow and promptly hooking Lightning. "Because we're meant to be together."

The sun sparkled on Lightning's hood, but he didn't speak his usual catch phrase of "Kachow!" as he awarded Mater with his best smile. Instead, he just agreed, "You're right," and let Mater pull him home.
