The Mistakes of One

Everyone makes mistakes. Some are big and others are small. Mistakes happen when you mistype a word, misread, forget, or mess up; mistakes are everywhere. Ever so often though, your mistake will affect the world.

Nothing wrong was supposed to happen. Fu didn't mean for any of this to happen; he just wanted to see and then protect. After being raised up in a the peaceful building, a small part of him wanted to rebel. It was the smallest ember, if you could even call it that. It wasn't as if what he did was against the rules, it was just highly suggested against. He wanted to see a book. That was it, a book.

In fact at first nothing he did was even close to rebelling. He went through the normal, painfully slow, channels. It took some time but he was going to be aloud into the chamber. He had known that wouldn't be able to read it. He was to young for this, or at times to old or that. He wasn't even the best in the group, he was close though. Being a guardian was a honor, and he knew that he still needed to learn a lot. Sometimes it was easy to forget why he did this. It wasn't something that you just signed up for or could ask around to be one. He never really was sure why he was picked, but he was glad. It could be lonely and quiet, there was a peace here though that he never could explain. A calm that came over him when his rare visits to the chamber happened. The knowledge of protecting something, something that mattered to him, and that he was trusted to do this.

It was a week before Fu was supposed to visit when all of the sudden the teachers started to seem agitated. Gone was the control of peace in their movements; in its place was distress, making all of their words and movements seem forced. The morning meal, a usually peaceful time in which the younger students could fully wake up, was silent. Now while it was usually quiet, it was almost never silent. The soft conversations of students discussing about their plans, the teachers usual conversations about the miraculouses and who would lead that day's meditation, and the few Elders watching a making a few remarks here and there to help, where gone. The Elders were also nowhere to be seen.

The entire day was tense, with the teachers obviously hiding something and the peacefulness of the temple gone, no one was having an amazing day. The classes went on as normal; though, almost everyone lost focus. The mid-day meal and the nightly meal where just as silent as the morning.

He didn't know what was happening until late into the night. The alarm rang, shocking everyone awake, signalling that the temple would soon be under attack.

It wasn't long until chaos swallowed the temple. A monster that appeared to be like an octopus was on one side, an army on the other, and something that was a living shadow on another. A teacher stopped him and brought him back behind the lines, grabbing his shoulder the teacher looked Fu in the eye and brought up his hand, a gold bracelet appeared, the key to the chamber. Fu flinched. Refusing to touch it, still the teacher put it in his hands. All of the adults where needed here. Someone needed to do it.

"Fu," the teachers voice was steady, "You need to protect the miraculouses." With that he left, leaving Fu to go the the chamber.

Fu ran to chamber, thinking about all the people he knows who are fighting. An attack has never actually made it to the temple before, the older guardians prevented that. Somehow though, this one made it through.

Fu stopped at the door to the chamber, hesitating he touched the side of the door and slid a small piece of wood off. Underneath it was a small hole, he put the bracelet in and turned it to the left yanking open the door. Stepping in the room he closed the door behind him, the candles were still light, and would last for a few more hours. Swallowing hard he stepped to the middle of the room, where the book was on a simple pillar. He had never read the book or even touched it. The calm feeling that came with protecting the book evaded him now. Protecting the book was easier when a battle was not going on outside. They had been told what to do if this ever happened, while it happened only once he remembered it. Open the door for no one, keep the bracelet with you so no one could get in, wait for an Elder to come, don't remove the book from the chamber. Fu took a deep breath, as he sat down to meditate. Simple instructions and the fight would probably be over soon and one of the Elders had a key. He wouldn't be here for a long time and everything would work out.

That is not what happened, the fight lasted for hours. He could hear it all in the chamber, it frustrated him that he couldn't help. He wanted to be out there fighting, he wanted to defend his home. The calm part in him told him that he was doing what he needed. Close calls surely happened before; the temple has survived for this long, it will survive this attack. But a tiny part of him wanted to fight, to defend even if it meant violence. A small ember in him, if you could even call it that, wanted to rebel. It wanted to protect. It was then, when he heard the knocking and things being thrown.

"It has to be here!" Fu stood up, listening to the strange voice. "The miraculouses must be here!" Fu looked at the simple pillar supporting the book. It didn't take a genius to figure out where they were kept. "I'll tear this place apart, and burn it to the ground if I have to," growled the voice.

"Sir! Over there," a younger voice said, "It's a door with no handle."

"Excellent! Next time don't wait for the youngest to point something out."

Fu heard them as they hit, knocked and try many different way to get the door open. The angry grumbles and furious roars, made Fu believe that they would give up.

"Let's go get something to start a fire," the first voice said.

"Sir?," this new voice questioned.

"I said let's go get something to burn this door down with."

"Are you sure?"

"Are you questioning me?"

"Of course not."

"Good, you stay here, everyone else come with me." Fu eyes widen as he heard them walk away, he couldn't stay here. No matter what the rules say, if he stays they'll burn the door down and the building with it to get the miraculouses and the book. He had to get them somewhere safe. He turned and saw a sword

He went to the door and opened it. A young man was standing there. He turned startled to see Fu, but he took out his sword and swung. Fu deflected him, which was the easiest part of the entire fight. Fu mistakenly thought the fight would be over quickly, it wasn't. The young fighter forced Fu back into the chamber, where Fu eventually knocked him out. Though, not before the chamber was ruined, with slashes in everything and many of the other books in the room thrown to the floor and ruined. In all the fighting neither noticed a candle wobbling.

Fu quickly grabbed the book and took out the box with the miraculouses. He didn't even stop to think about how this was his first time holding either. As he stepped over the unconscious body, he briefly thought if what he's doing was right. He was taking the two most important things he knows about and taking them into a battle. He purposely engaged someone, even if they swung first, he meant for it to happen. He ruined the chamber. Shaking away the thought he runs through the door slamming it.

The wobbling candle fell.

He ran as fast as he could. He didn't run to the fight, but away from it. Fu ran even faster when he felt everything slowly get warmer. It's a good thing I ran, he thought, they're starting to burn down the door. He ran and ran and ran. Once he was out of the temple he stopped to catch his breath and heard footsteps. He hide as he watched unknown people stare at the temple.

"It's on fire!" the tallest man said, his voice was the first one by the door, "We didn't start it! The miraculouses!" he turned around his eyes wild, "We must go now before they burn."

"Didn't you want it to burn?"

"Yes," he hissed out, "I wanted to control it though. This fire is not controlled, it'll destroy everything."

Fu eyes widened. If they didn't start the fire, who did? Than, he remember all the candles and all the ruined books on the floor. Fu stumbled away, he started this. Glancing around nervously he opened the box and took out the butterfly miraculous knowing he could give others the power to put out the fire.

"There!" a voice called out. Fu quickly closed the box not seeing the peacock miraculous fallout and the butterfly one not quite making it in. Fu hugged both the box and the book to his chest as he ran to the mountains. When he got far enough away to where the shouts of fire and war where no longer heard he collapsed. His knees where freezing, as the snow slowly seeped into his clothes. He didn't care as he looked behind him. The temple was in flames. He knew that none of the other guardians would leave. They'd be searching for something that wasn't there, something that he took.

Nothing was suppose to happen. It did though, and he had to live with that. He only wanted to protect, not harm. Fu took deep breaths as he cried. He forced himself to stand up, and keep walking. He hugged the box and the book to his chest. He would protect both things, he'd do everything in his power and then some to protect a box and a book.

It was four days later when he figured out two miraculouses where missing. It was six months later when the book disappeared in of all places a library. Fu never could forgive himself for his mistakes. He never let them stop him though. He knew that one day the mistakes would cause even bigger problems. He would be there though, he would protect the miraculouses and give them out if they wherever needed.
