Chapter 1
…
What A Nice Birthday Present!
He was lying on the grassy field, watching the few bright stars twinkle in the calm night sky. He ran away from the celebration of his own special day. It was never his choice to celebrate his birthday every 27th of November.
Why did birthdays need to be celebrated anyway? For gifts? For fame? For fun?
In his tenth years of existence, he never knew why he needed to celebrate the day he was born. For him, everyday was just an ordinary day – Birthdays, Christmas or even Halloween, all of it, just plain normal.
– Or was it because he never knew why he existed in the first place?
Hyuuga Natsume only turned ten this year and his father already introduced him to the world where only adults would understand. Being the only son of the Hyuuga family, one of the wealthiest family in Japan, his father wanted him to be the perfect successor - not like he could do anything about it at his current age.
His father always held a big party for his birthday and invited a lot of people to attend the celebration. But was that even for him? Or only for his wealthy friends and business partners?
That fact, he never knew.
The stars in the sky continued to twinkle vibrantly in the dark night sky. He let out a small sigh and smiled bitterly.
'I wish I'm just a star in the sky. They're all free... unlike me.'
He was busy watching the stars in the sky, until he felt someone's presence slowly approaching him. He didn't make any move until the footsteps stopped.
"Hey." A girl's voice called. It was cheerful and sweet. He sat down and looked at the owner of the voice hesitantly.
The darkness that was enveloping the surrounding concealed the identity of the girl in front of him.
"What do you want?" he asked in his normal cold and distant voice, narrowing his crimson eyes.
The girl remained standing for about five feet away from him. "Hmm. Are you the celebrant?" she asked curiously.
Natsume raised a brow after hearing her question. "So what? Who the hell are you anyway?" He asked suspiciously.
The girl began to approach him and stopped for about 2 feet away from him. Natsume could see her bright white teeth as she smiled. She was about his age, with pig-tailed auburn hair. The light from the moon illuminated her vibrant hazel eyes.
"Here." The girl threw a small, well-wrapped present at Natsume. Instead of catching the package, it landed flat on his face.
"My mom said that I should give that to the celebrant." The girl chuckled. Natsume stared at the present and threw on the ground. He glared fiercely at the obscure figure of the little girl.
"Why you! I don't care about your present!" The girl flashed a small smile as she shrugged her shoulders. She turned around and was about to walk away, but Natsume, being annoyed, stood up and grabbed her wrist with great force. This made the girl to spin around and wince in pain.
"Why did you do that?" Natsume asked in angrily. The girl stared at him. The light from the moon illuminated her face and he finally got a clear view of her hazel-colored eyes. She was still calm and no sign of fear could be seen in her eyes.
"Because my mother told me so." She answered calmly. "Care to release me? You're holding me like there's no tomorrow." She added mockingly.
Natsume stared unbelievingly to the girl in front of him. He remembered many situations like this happened before but the girl in front of him was different. She was not scared or frightened; instead, she was calm and confident.
Being shocked at her actions, he released her.
"Who are you?" He asked, throwing her a questioning glare. The girl sighed and smiled lightheartedly.
"Need-not-to-know." She sang with teasing tone. She was about to walk away again but…
"Tch. Ugly. I must call you ugly because you look horrible with that dress." He said as he crossed his arms and smirked at the girl. Of course Natsume was lying, because for him, the girl was stunningly beautiful in her baby blue gown, beautiful as the stars in the sky.
"Do as you wish, jerk." The girl answered and stuck out her tongue childishly. Natsume slowly approached her and moved his face closer to her.
"And you're stupid, Ms. Ugly." He took his cellphone from his pocket and…
Click!
The girl was blinded by a white, flashing light as she heard a shutter sound. Natsume smirked and looked at newly captured photo. It was dark but it clearly shown the frowning face of the girl.
"Really ugly." He teased. He saw the girl clenching her fist, slowly losing her patience.
'Better than I thought.' Natsume thought evilly.
The girl sighed. She glared at Natsume, a deadly one.
"Jerk." She snapped, which made Natsume keep his annoying smirk.
"…but since it's your birthday, it's okay." She said as she smiled stupidly. Those words from the girl made Natsume's jaw dropped.
'What kind of girl is this?' He thought while trying his best not to laugh at her.
"Idiotic little girl." He mumbled.
"Oh by the way, treasure every gift that was given to you. Don't just throw them away." She added and picked up the present that Natsume threw away.
She stood in front of him and offered the present to once again. "Happy birthday, jerk." This time, her tone was honest and sincere; the kind of greeting that Natsume was always waiting for. Her warm smile shattered his cold exterior. He could feel his cheeks burning up and his heart beating fast at the same time.
"T-t-thank you." He stuttered and accepted the present. He looked down on the ground to hide his blushing face. In the first time of his life, Hyuuga Natsume thanked someone. It gave him a weird feeling and he couldn't explain it.
He was about to look at the girl in front of him again, but instead, he saw a blinding light followed by a 'CLICK' sound. Now it was Natsume's time to be frozen.
"Now this is the true ugly thing." The girl said with a teasing voice as she laughed. She stared at the photo at her cellphone. Her smirk grew bigger.
'Ooh, what a cute blushing face.'
She laughed angelically before turning her heels around and ran away.
"Till next time, stupid jerk!" was her last words before leaving the bewildered birthday boy. Natsume snapped back to reality.
"Darn it!" he cursed. He scanned the surrounding but she was not there anymore.
He shook his head and released sigh.
A small smile curved in his lips.
For a short time that day, he felt happy and contented.
'Definitely the best birthday I've ever had.' He thought and stared at the present she gave him. With a small smile on his face, he followed the path where she disappeared.
This marked the start of his pursuit. Pursuit for that one girl who gave him a reason to feel contented that day.
…
Natsume started to look for her inside their mansion. He almost searched the whole place but since the place was packed with people, his search was a failure.
"Where is that little girl?" Natsume asked to himself. He continued to walk around while scanning the whole place, ignoring all the greetings he was getting. He thought he would never see her again.
Not until his mother noticed him.
"Natsume, dear, are you looking for someone?" his mother, Kaoru Hyuuga asked.
Natsume stared boringly at the lady in front of him. "None of your business okaa-san." He answered rudely.
The lady around her thirtees just laughed at the reply of her son.
"That's so rude of you Natsume, you shouldn't answer me like that." His mother retorted with a pout.
Natsume rolled his eyes. "Fine, I'm looking for this girl." He said as he showed her the photo from his cellphone.
Kaoru's eyes sparkled with joy. "Oh, she's so cute, I guess my little son has found his destiny." She said, happiness was evident in her tone.
"Whatever. So did you see her?" he asked again, his face showed annoyance.
Kaoru looked around and smiled widely. She put a finger under her chin. "Hmm…I think that's her." She pointed at an auburn-haired girl, wearing a baby blue dress. She was with two adults, which he thought was her parents and a silver-haired kid. They exited the mansion which made Natsume anxious. He shoved the present he securely holding a while ago to his mother. Kaoru released a short laugh because of his son's actions.
"Ugly girl!" he yelled which made the guests to look at him, but he didn't care. All he wanted was to know her name. But unfortunately, the girl did not hear him which made him to run after her.
"Oh, nice choice my son!" Kaoru shouted in delight. Now the guest's attention was in her.
"Hihi." She laughed shyly, covering her mouth.
…
Natsume exited the mansion and saw her entered a stylish black car. He yelled again which finally caught her attention.
The girl peered through the window of the car and saw him. Her eyes widen in surprise.
'The jerk'.
The car engine started and began to drive away. To her surprise, he chased after the car.
'What's with him? Is he out of his mind?'
"Nee-chan, what are you looking at?" the silver-haired boy who was sitting beside her, asked.
"Nothing." The little boy traced the direction where her sister was looking and saw this raven haired guy following their car.
He furrowed his brow. "Ne, nee-chan's boyfriend?" The silver haired boy mumbled.
"Shut up, Youichi." The girl retorted. She glanced for the last time at the boy that was chasing the car. She couldn't help but to smiled.
'That one was really stupid.'
…
Due to tiredness, Natsume stopped chasing the car. He breathed rapidly, his hands were on his knees. He stared at the car that was slowly fading out of his sight as his lips formed a small, genuine smile.
"That girl, giving me this weird feeling..."
