(Story Setting: 2 days after the events of Hannibal. Clarice stands with other fellow agents at the funeral of Paul Krendler. While her and Paul had a lot of tension between the two of them before his death, she still felt sadness over his death.)
Clarice stood next to her longtime friend Alice Tillman. Alice had recently transferred into the FBI. Clarice was glad to have a true friend on the team with her. Alice had completely the same training that Clarice had gone through eleven years ago. She saw herself in Alice. It made her think of the past and her time at the academy. How as a student she took down Buffalo Bill and meet Dr. Lecter. Now years later she was older and still running around after Dr. Lecter. She was beginning to be typecast as the Dr. Lecter specialist. The news would constantly put her name alongside Lecter's in a newscast. The time she spent trying to obtain the good doctor left her with a feeling of emptiness. She had started the case ten years ago and still trying to catch Dr. Lecter to this day. The other agents around her were growing tired of Clarice retaining her celebrity status through Dr. Lecter. She had been a high profile agent worker on a celebrated case for years. They were some in the department that wanted the Lecter caught and saw it as a failure by Clarice that he hadn't been.
After the funeral Clarice walked back to her car. She was surprised to see a familiar face waiting for her. It was the face of Will Graham. The two had never met face to face but knew each other from the newspaper clippings and television reports. Graham had been made famous when he arrested Dr. Lecter. They were both know as experts when it came to dealing with Dr. Lecter. They had both enlisted the wisdom of Dr. Lecter to help with "Buffalo Bill" and "The Tooth Fairy."
Starling: You must have cannibalism on you mind Special Agent Graham?
Graham: Now why would you say that?
Starling: We both seem to be drawn to Lecter.
Graham: I guess you could say that. I am more repulsed than enamored.
Starling: You must have news or some lead as to where Lecter is hiding.
Graham: Well he was spotting on a plan heading to South America
Starling: So why are you here? You know South America is out of our jurisdiction.
Graham: I am here because the department is tired of being out smarted by Lecter.
Will went out to explain that the department was teaming him up with Clarice. The two would have one last chance at capturing the fugitive who had been on the run for many years. If Dr. Lecter was in South America they were going to have to lure him back to the states. Clarice knew she would have to put herself back into the public eye to bring Lecter out of hiding. Graham explained that the department was growing tired of Clarice letting Lecter slip by time after time. The department called him out of retirement once more. Will had trouble convincing his wife Molly that he was doing the right thing.
Starling: How are we going to get Dr. Lecters attention?
Graham: We are going to publicly ask for his help.
Starling: Help?
Graham: We need his help catching a new victim in Washington D.C.
Starling: I am sorry I haven't been briefed on this new case
Graham: Here is the case file
He hands a file to Clarice. While she had been chasing Lecter a new danger emerged out of Washington. The media had dubbed him the "Crucifix Killer" for the way he killed his victims. She looked over the horrific photos. The victims had been nailed to the wall in similar to Jesus Christ. The suspect name was Jason Neatherlands. This time it seems as they were going to be chasing psycho. Jason had a history of mental illness. He shown no remorse to any of his victims. The killings seem to be apart of some vigilante justice. All of the victims seem to have had some downfall in there lives. The first victim had been caught cheating on her husband. The next victim was a high profile church member who stole money from the congregation. The next three had been in and out of drug rehab. The continue list of victims read the same. Jason had killed more than fourteen people. The death toll would continue to rise unless the two of them could stop it. The two agents went to the FBI office to further go over the file. If they failed to bring Lecter out of hiding they still had to capture Jason Neatherlands. Will had noticed a pattern of murders. Jason would strike two weeks from every murder. A reference into Jason's background check revealed a history of domestic violence, minor drug abuse, and mental problems. At the age of sixteen he was banned from attending Hill Meyers Baptist Church after he sexual assaulted a girl in the bathrooms. Pastor Robinson heard the girl yelling stop and burst into the bathroom. He found Jason on top of the girl in a stall. The young girls face was watered with tears and her blouse had been undone. After church Pastor Robinson called Jason into his office. He explained to Jason that it would be in everyones best interest if he found a new church to attend. Jason was a young teen that struggled with religion and beliefs in God.
While walking home that evening Jason began was confronted by the girls brother and his friends who attended the church. The boys were armed with baseball bats and noticeable angry. Jason pleaded and said he was sorry. The sorrowful words seem to fall on deaf ears and the boys bruttally beat him with the baseball bats. Jason was hospitalized for two months. The charge of rape was avoided when the girl finally admitted she was Jason's girlfriend and urged him to make advances toward her inside the bathroom. She then realized it was going to far and cried for help. The police did not charge Jason with any abuse or rape charges. After his two months stay in the hospital Jason returned to Hill Meyer Church at a Sunday evening session. He waited outside at the car of Pastor Robinson. When the pastor arrived he was stabbed twice by Jason. The pastor was placed in the hospital and the police began to search for Jason. A few months later the police found Jason at the home of the girl he had attacked at church. He sat outside on the steps with blood covering his body. The police raced inside the home. They found the brother of the young girl on the floor dead. He had been cut across the throat with a knife. They called out for the girl. When no answer came from inside they returned outside to speak to Jason. It was then Jason admitted he had killed the brother. He informed the police that the young girl was upstairs. The polce found the girl upstairs in her bedroom. She was laying dead on her bed. Jason had stripped the clothes from her body and carved the words: "You Sin with your body" on her back with a knife.
The was the first of Jason's horrific crimes. He was arrested and served two years in juvenille correctional facility. He was then sent to prison where he served a two year sentence. He was released after just serving 4 years total. The community was outraged at such a short sentence. The judge explained Jason was underaged at the time of his crimes and made great progress inside the prison system. After his release Jason moved from Yancey, Washington to Starks, Washington just a few towns over. It was his first chance to start a new life. This wasnt the case and his killing spree began just four months after his prison release. The first victim was his girlfriend Kathy Greene. Kathy was a twenty-one year old waitress at the Hungry Cafe in Starks. She was found nailed to the wall. She had a large metal nail driven through her hands. She had been positioned in the image of Jesus on the cross. The words lust had been carved into her naked body. Jason had left a message on the wall written in her blood. The message read: "You bleed your soul for money". The local towns people had described Kathy as being very flirty and wearing revealing outfits as a way to pick up extra tips from her costumers. She was a very nice girl and though she may have used her good looks to get extra tips it wasnt anything that deserved death. The search for Jason continued. The bodies began to pile up. They had all been killed the same way. As in all the murders each body had a message of what Jason saw as thier sins. The police conclude he was some kind of sex addict as all his femal victims were killed and stipped naked. The male victims were all found with their eyes removed. The killings started to happening in other surrounding states. A few months ago three bodies were found in Washington. They had been murdered in the same style Jason had been know for. It seemed the Crucifix Killer has returned home. It was up to Clarice and Will to find him and stop the brutal killings.
Clarice closed the case file. After years of reading about murders and seeing the crime photos she realized she still managed to be affected the victims. She realized looking at the photos that Jason had little remorse to what he had done. A senior officer came into the room where the two sat. The officers name was Jack Bowman. Jack had taken over after Jack Crawfords death. Dr. Lecter had caught up with Crawford years earlier. The agency recieved parts of Jack Crawfords body in multiple UPS packages. Lecter had enclosed a note inside inside. The event was a reminder to Clarice and Will just how dangerous Lecter could be.
Bowman: There has been another murder by Jason. We need you two in Washington to look over the crime seen. A plane leaves in an hour. You have to be on it.
Graham: What are the details?
Bowman: The same as before. A young girl in her twenties. She was found attached to the wall and naked just like the others. We know its him.
Starling: Have you alerted the media or informed any of her family?
Bowman: Not yet. We want you two to look over the house before this becomes a media frenzy.
The pattern was proving to be true. The murder had been two weeks from the last victim. They both knew they had to find something that would lead them to Jason. They only had two weeks until another victim would be claimed. Will and Clarice didnt have much time. They packed a few belongings and headed for the airport. The two borded the plane. While on the plane a guy recongnized the two agents. He introduced himself as Tom Sants. He was a reporter for the local newspaper.
Tom: You two off to find Hannibal the Cannibal?
Graham: You know we cannot discuss what business the FBI has if we had any.
Tom: Oh c'mon Clarice and Graham. You two wrote the book on Hannibal Lecter. I dont think its fate that your on the same plane ride together.
Clarice: Tom is it?
Tom: Yes
Clarice: What we do in our own time is private. We have nothing to say to the local paper on or off the record.
Tom: Okay, well maybe you can catch him this time.
Graham: Whats that suppose to mean?
Clarice: Mr. Sants we deal with dangerous mean everyday. Dr. Lecter is no higher up or any different from the rest of the people we put away to protect people like you.
The media had always manage to upset both Will and Clarice. It had seem Tom Sants had been put in his place. Tom turned away from the two of them and began talking to the lady next to him. Will laid his head back and prepared for the five hour flight to Washington state. He began to miss his wife Molly. The two had gotten into a fight before they left. He tried to convince Molly that he was finally going to put Dr. Lecter away for good. The FBI personally called him to help catch Jason Neatherlands and Lecter. Clarice was the best agent the FBI had. He knew if they teamed up they could put Jason and Lecter in a cell for the rest of thier lives. Dr. Lecter had been a stain on the careers of Graham and Starling and they both had something to porve. After all Dr. Lecter was an aging man and if they didnt catch him this time he was going to remain a free man.
