Just a little idea that appeared in my mind this morning, I don't consider myself an expert on the old series of Doctor Who so ignore any mistakes I've made. If one of the character used in this (I can't say the name as it would spoil any 'surprises') is actually dead or it's impossible that they would be there then I apologise!

Just a quick recommendation; listen to the song Breathe Me by Sia when you read this.

She pulled herself up from the ground and looked around to see where she was. It seemed to be a back alley way, it was filthy and she could have sworn she'd seen a rat. Dazed and disorientated she made her way to the opening of the alley and stepped out in to the foreign land. Travelling without a time capsule of some sort was never a good idea especially when you had no idea of where you were travelling to!

As she walked down the street looking for clues of where and when she could be she spotted something that made her hearts beat a little faster. In front of her was a blue police box. One she had travelled in many years ago?

It couldn't be the Tardis, could it! She had locked on to the last place a time lord had landed but the chances of it being him…

The door to the police box swung open and out walked a young man with messy hair wearing a pinstriped suit, that wasn't the man she had left all those years ago, but then again he could have regenerated many times since she'd last seen him, she certainly had.

She began to walk toward the man, unsure of what might happen, she wondered- if it was him- what he'd been up in the past years, if he'd heard anything from home and if he'd forgotten her.

She was so caught up in her thoughts that she didn't see the tin can lying on the road, next thing she knew she was sprawled out on the ground.

"Are you all right?" The man was running towards her, his coat flying out behind him. He bent down beside her.

"Just a little sore," she replied, "I'm sure I'll be fine." The man offered her his hand and pulled her up off the street. She was desperate to know if it really was him, but how could she ask him? What if it wasn't?

"I'm the Doctor." He introduced himself. She suddenly felt more hope and happier than she had felt when she had left him, she had found him! After all this time!

"Doctor!" She cried "It really is you." She reached out and stroked his face, "you regenerated."

He looked at her, his eyes clouded by confusion.

"I'm sorry, do I know you?" For a second she felt disappointment crushing down on her, but of course he wouldn't recognise her, she had a new face after all.

"It's me, Romana!" His eyes widened then he picked her up and swung her round.

"I thought you were dead! How, how did you get here?" The doctor placed her back down on the ground.

"I teleported," He looked confused "A time agent visited E-space and gave me this wrist strap." She clarified.

"How come you left?" this was a question she'd been hoping to avoid; it was too painful to remember.

"These creatures, Raxacoricofallapatorians came and attempted to destroy E-space, they were killing everyone and everything who tried to stop them, and soon I was the only one left so I locked on to the last place a Time Lord had landed…"

"…And ended up here." The doctor finished for her.

"Yes," she nodded solemnly. "How is everyone back home, I tried visiting but every time I tried to teleport nothing happened."

The Doctor suddenly seemed very interested in his left foot.

"Doctor? I said how is everyone?" He pulled her down on to the ground so she was sitting next to him, he seemed to be having trouble with looking her in the eye.

"I though you would have known, in fact I though you'd been there when it happened."

"When what happened?"

"They're gone, Romana. All of them."

Romana stared at him in shock, her people, gone? The eternal race, the Time Lords.

"How?"

"There was a war, the last great Time War. And we fought, oh how we fought! The war brought so much destruction and when the war finished there was no one, just me. Or at least I thought that until I met the Master again, he's gone too now. And you, just me and you. The last of our kind." Romana shook her head unable to comprehend what she had just heard.

"But, I didn't know! I couldn't help." She stammered. She couldn't understand how she hadn't heard. Why she hadn't been there to fight alone side the people she loved! Tears began to roll down her cheeks and on to her lap.

The Doctor reached out to her and wrapped her up in a hug. He told her that it was alright and that there was nothing she could have done to change what had happened.

"But what if we went back?" She suggested, "To stop it from happening!"

"It's been placed under time lock. We can't change it." He looked at her, desperate to stop her from crying but unable to think of anything to say to console her.

They both stayed that way, in each others arms sitting on the filthy street, for a while, until Romana has cried every last tear for her lost world. Eventually she sat up wiping her eyes.

"So, what have you been up to? It's been years since I last saw you. I assume you've been getting in to a lot of trouble." he laughed, happy to see that she wasn't crying.

"Oh you know, Daleks, Sontarans, the usual. And I met the devil."

"Trouble always did manage to find you didn't it." She smiled.

The two old friends sat watching the sun set over the skyscrapers reminiscing about their times together in the tardis, they never mentioned Galifrey or their families and friends although the subject was always lingering in the air. And as the last splash of colour left the city sky, the Doctor rose to his feet and helped Romana to hers. They walked back towards the Tardis and set off in to the stars. And finally Romana was back where she belonged.

The End.

This was just a one shot but if you think I should write more about the Doctor and Romanas adventures let me know.
