Never Say Never

Chapter 1: Fire

The stench of smoke choked me. My heart raced like the paws of me and my father.

"Run, Koda! Run!" He yelled to me.

My paws were raw and scraped on the pads. My lungs begged for the little oxygen around me.

The trees erupted into flames around me. I cried out in fear and stopped. My father kept pushing me though.

"You've gotta go, Koda. If I don't make it, you have to!" He hissed.

"What do you mean? We're both gonna make it! You'll be ok!" I called as we resumed our run, narrowly avoiding a falling branch from a nearby tree.

"GO!" He growled.

Suddenly, we heard a "CRACK" and the tree in front of us started falling. If we ran faster, one of us could get past it, but only one.

"Get out of here Koda, and remember, I love you!"

With that, he pushed me to the other side of the falling tree. As it crashed to the ground, blocking the last exit, I realized what my father had done.

He had saved me, by sacrificing himself.

"No…" I backed away from the flaming forest, my blue eyes wide. "Oh, Father…Oh, no!"

I wanted to go back, to see if there was any way to help him, but I knew it was too late. My paws burned for rest and my mouth felt extremely dry. The tips of my long brownish-auburn fur were singed, as well as my whiskers and tail. I was weak and helpless, and there was nothing I could do.

I couldn't fight to stay conscious any longer. My eyelids drooped and I fell to my side.

But before I felt darkness swallow me, I saw a black shape running towards me from the direction of the old barn.

And then, nothing.
