"How did this happen, you ask? I tried to impress someone. Which someone? Anyone. It's a vicious, unbreakable cycle. So, my answer, therefore, to thoroughly and properly satisfy that problem is-"

The bell. Which bell was that? No one's out here. Was that the first or second bell? Or did I accidentally skip class again? Damn. How did that happen?

A small, warm hand grasped my elbow and steered me toward 4th period.

"We didn't skip class again, don't worry."

I looked down at the strangest friend I'd ever made, amazed at her patience with me.

"So, what's your answer?"

Getting back to my original train of thought, "the answer is to give up." I lightly tossed my arms in the air as we came to the end of our trek. We turned to face each other in the middle of the bustling walkway.

My much-younger friend made her doubt plain.

"I'm serious!"

Nodding, she waved it off, "I'm sure. We should get to class."

I realized the bustling had made way to only couples clinging in their last seconds before class. I nodded in agreement, "We should. See ya later, shrimp!

"History is going to kill me."

I laughed, "How? Are all the history books of the world going to give you paper cuts and make you bleed to death?" Sitting down at the picnic table, I pulled her book over.

"And dad won't let anyone help me," scrunching her face up. Imitating her father, "It's still cheating. Whether it's first-hand experience or not."

"Ahhh… the great depression. Didn't 3 of them live all the way through that?"

"Yeah, Aunt Rose…eh, joined about half-way."

I laughed again, "That's one way to put it. Do they know about me yet?"

She grimaced.

"Nessie, are you telling me that they still think you're best friends with a human?"

"It's getting harder. I think dad may be a bit suspicious. I can't plan on telling them though, Aunt Alice would see it and then dad would see it in her mind and they'll be even more mad than if I just thoughtlessly threw it at them."

"Or you could get Alice on your side so that she would be careful and not ruin it. Besides, I have to be there so that they can't totally explode on you." I nudged her shoulder with mine.

"Oh nice! So you'd let them partially explode on me? But not totally, what a nice friend you are." She snorted.

I shrugged, "Maybe just partially… Ya never know!"

"You're more unpredictable than Aunt Alice, you know that? It's almost annoying."

"Almost."

"Almost…. Yeah, I like that idea. But how do I get her on my side? Mmmm… We could tell her while we're shopping! Anything that is mixed with shopping…. Speak of the devil and she shall appear."

We watched in silence as the driver of a yellow Porsche climbed out. A pixie with short black hair danced over to the table without a second thought.

"History again?" the pixie sunk into the seat across from me so gracefully it was almost painful to watch.

"What else?"

Renesmee scowled at me, I just grinned.

"Hello, Aunty Alice. How'd camping go?"

I looked away for a moment, feeling uneasy and awkward. That was the biggest difference between us: our diets.

"It was good. We had to all but kick your father out to go hiking with G'pa and G'ma." She rolled her eyes.

I stifled a laugh and looked away again.

"Dearest aunty Alice, can Josie sleepover tonight?"

My head whipped around, just resisting a glare.

"If it's okay with her parents," Alice nodded.

Almost bouncing in her seat, the evil little freshman took advantage: "Isn't your dad out of town for the week?"

"Great! Why don't I take you girls shopping?"

"I don't have any money," I protested.

"Didn't I say that I would take you shopping? You don't need money." Without another word, she rose from her seat and walked back over to her Porcshe.

"I ran today."

"What?" I watched as Nessie's face got even paler.

"I ran today," I repeated, murmuring so she would be the only one to hear it. "I don't know. I-"

I took the bus. THAT is my story. And THAT is what I'm stickin' to.
