Death

"NO! NOT MY SON! NO!" Lily tried to hold back her tears as the mother of her patient started to crying hysterically. She had been familiar with this view. And although she'd been watching it for the last three years, it still made her cry so badly.

"I'm really, really sorry ma'am. But we've tried everything, and… Todd didn't make it." She said slowly. Mrs. Nash yelled miserably, as her husband tried to comfort her.

"And… Charlie and Charlotte? Are they okay?" He tried to change the subject. Lily nodded. Even if she couldn't make the couple's first son stay live, she already worked on their twins.

"Yes, they've been moved to the ICU ward. You should be able to see them in a few hours." Lily was relieved that she'd be able to at least deliver one good news to the grieving parents. Even so, she's still feeling guilty for their son's life that she's unable to save.

"Okay, I'll leave you two alone. Good night." Lily greeted them, before disappeared to the outside of the surgery room.

"Hey, Flower." Suddenly, behind her, the love of her life, her lawfully wedded husband, and the father of her unborn child appeared. She smiled to him weakly.

"What's the matter flower? You're seems so upset." He asked her in concern. "Is it the baby? Is he alright?"

She shook her head. "No. The baby's fine. It just… oh James…" She cried on his chest. "I couldn't save a boy's life today. And he's only fifteen." She sobbed miserably. James hugged her awkwardly, mostly because the doctors and nurses that passed them stopped a while for watching.

"Hey... it's alright..." he said soothingly. "I'm sure he's going to be just fine..." He trailed off, not sure what he was going to say. Lily shook her head.

"B-but it's my job... I-I'm supposed to h-help p-people... not let them d-die..." She said shakily. At this, James cupped her face so her puffy green eyes met his blazing hazel.

"Now you listen to me, Lily Marie Evans Potter," He said sternly. "You did not let that boy died. You worked hard to save him, not just watched him die slowly. There's a big difference between 'letting people die' and 'saving people who was about to die but failed'." He released her.

"But what if—" Lily's protest was cut by him. "No 'what if's, you worked so damn hard, I can see it in your face. It's not your fault he died, not at all. Besides, isn't death is just another great adventure?"

Lily muffled a laugh between the tears. "Quoting from old Dumbledore, aren't you?" She teased him weakly. James smirked. "Of course, to one and only." He said. He sneaked his arms around her waist, leading her home. "Now come on Flower, I bought some of your Chinese food cravings."

Lily laughed, but then she frowned. "Hey James?" She asked him. "What if..." She trailed off, unsure what she was about to say.

James raised an eyebrow. "What if what?" He asked her gently. She sighed heavily, "What if our baby is hurting like that boy and we couldn't save him? What would you do?"

James was a little taken aback by the question. He thought it for a moment, before smiling brilliantly. "We're not going to do anything." He said, and before Lily could cut him with any protests, he continued, "Because whoever wants to hurt my little kid and my bloody gorgeous wife over here—" He kissed her forehead, "He'd have to do it after stepping my dead body."
