I Gave You All

It was just another cycle at the garage. Work was busier than usual, and once again Mara was forced into taking Beck's shift. Zed had called the day off after fixing three light cycles, a tank and a light copter. He was frazzled from working for most of the cycle.

Exhaustion crept over Beck's shoulders as he staggered into the garage. Mara looked up from her work when she noticed his arrival. She frowned after noticing how tired he looked.

"Beck, what have you been doing?" she demanded. She pulled aside the bits of code she had pulled apart from the damaged light jet. It was a particularly difficult piece of code that even the brightest mechanic couldn't fix.

"I'm fine." Mara folded her arms in annoyance. That was always his reply nowadays.

"Rip the earth in two with your mind, and seal the urge which ensues with brass wires, I never meant you any harm, but your tears feel warm as they fall on my forearms."

"Beck, you're obviously not fine," Mara told him. "You need a break!"

His expression told her that she was wrong. But she knew that he needed energy. And more than anything, he needed rest.

"But close my eyes for a while, and force from the world a patient smile."

"It's okay Mara," he reassured her. "I'll be fine."

Mara watched him carefully as he headed for Able's office. Something told her that he was far from fine.

It's been this way ever since Bodhi's death, she realized. He had never really been the same since their friend was derezzed. Had she really never noticed the change in Beck?

She couldn't let this get out of hand. There had to be some way to help him.

. . .

"And how can you say that your truth is better than ours? Shoulder to shoulder, now brother, we carry no arms and the blind man sleeps in the doorway his home, If only I had an enemy bigger than my apathy I could have won"

Anger churned through Mara when she saw what the Renegade had done. Cycles had passed since she promised to help her friend in any way she could.

But how could she help him when he was in fact the Renegade? Beck was now a wanted enemy of the Occupation. Everyone in Argon City had learned his true identity. And now Beck refused to even show himself to the programs he'd once called friends.

He could have told them the truth. He could have spared them the sorrows he had caused. As the Renegade he nearly had them killed several times. And Mara had almost fallen for his act.

"But I gave you all, I gave you all, I gave you all"

She had fought with every ounce of strength she had left to keep her friends safe. And now because of Beck, the Renegade, or whoever he was, they were all at risk of deresolution.

That sting of betrayal would never be forgotten.

"You're nothing but a traitor!" The words sounded painful as she joined the other mechanics that had been fired for standing up to Pavel.

"Mara don't." Zed tried to calm her as her shoulders trembled with anger. "Don't you think what we've learned is painful enough?"

She closed her eyes and thought of all the good times she had. It felt like cycles had passed since she had any real fun, or any good memories.

"Close my eyes for a while, And force from the world a patient smile"

Clu had won. The Renegade was captured. He had taken everything from them, and he had won.

"And you rip it from my hands, and you swear it's all gone, and you rip out all I had, just to say that you've won, you've won, well, now you've won"

AN: So this is just a songfic I thought of randomly. It doesn't necessarily follow the show, but it's more of an experiment than anything else.

The song is called I Gave You All by Mumford and Sons. I highly recommend you hear their music, very deep and emotional stuff :)
