Author's Note: I loved Monsters University and "Randy" Boggs was both one of my absolute favorite elements of that movie and also one of my biggest problems with it. I personally wish Mike and Randy would have at least gotten a couple more speaking scenes together following Randy joining Roar Omega Roar. It would have helped Randy's transition feel a bit smoother. This one shot is just a scene I came up with that I might have liked to have seen in the movie. Anyway, I hope you all enjoy it!
Best Chums
Randy took a deep breath as he stared at the Oozma Kappa house. Her nervously tugged on his Roar Omega Roar shirt. For some reason, it was a feeling a bit tighter than it normally did. His eyes examined every inch of the front of the house as he moved towards the front door. It was a simple, quaint suburban home. It was certainly a far cry from the gargantuan building that was the Roar Omega Roar fraternity house; but Randy like it for that. Off to the side and hidden away from the hustle and bustle of the main Monsters University campus. A truly perfect home for a fraternity like Oozma Kappa.
His heart skipped a beat as came to a halt at the front door. Why was he so nervous? He was just going to talk to his friend. Nothing to be scared of. He raised his upper right arm and gave three knocks. Everything was eerily quiet for a moment. That was until the door flung open and a pink monster with five eyes, dressed in a flowery blue shirt, and with her blonde hair full of hair curlers appeared in the doorway.
"Hello there!" she said with a large smile on her face. "Are you another one of Scott's little friends?"
Randy gave a nervous chuckle and tugged on his shirt collar. "I'm actually here to see Mike. Is he here?" he asked in response.
"He sure is! Let me get him for you."
Randy jumped as the door was slammed shut in his face. That's some strength for a monster like her, he thought as he took a couple steps back. He didn't have to wait long for the door to open again; this time revealing the monster Randy had come to see.
Mike was silent for a few seconds as he saw who was standing on the porch. Randy's nervous smile grew a bit as he waved his upper right arm. "Hey...Mike," he said awkwardly.
Mike's face formed into something that was only a few muscle movements away from a scowl. "What do you want?" he asked.
Randy rubbed the back of his head. "I just wanted to come by and wish you luck for tonight. We've both been so busy with our own fraternities that we've hardly spoken to each other."
"Is that the reason? I thought you didn't want anything to do with me anymore."
"Why would you think that?"
Mike gave a "are you serious" glare before clearing his throat. "Don't blow this for me, Mike. Does that sound familiar?"
Randy was caught off guard for a second. "I had just gotten accepted by my team! I wanted to prove myself to them first!"
"But what about me?! I'm your friend! I needed your help!"
"You're not my only friend, Mike. They're my friends too."
Mike blew raspberries and waved a hand through the air. "Please."
Randy raised an eyebrow. "What's that supposed to mean?"
Mike sighed. "Do you really think those guys in Roar Omega Roar are your friends, Randy?" he asked.
"Yes! I do! They respect me! We help each other out! They think I'm cool like they are!" Randy replied.
"They like what you can do, Randy. That doesn't mean they like you for who you are. They think what you can do can help them win the Scare Games and make them even more popular. Hey! We got a guy who can disappear! That's awesome, right?! Come hang with us!" Randy tugged on his shirt collar again while Mike continued to glare at him. "I'm willing to bet that the very second you mess something up, the moment you do something embarrassing, when you do something that in any way makes Roar Omega Roar look any less awesome...they're going to throw you out like a piece of garbage. They don't care about you, Randy."
Randy shook his head vigorously. "I don't believe that, Mike. You're wrong about them. They've really helped me and-"
"Helped you?! How have they helped you?! They've made you cool, is that it? They've helped get you into the in-crowd? Then what? Who's the one who was nice to you from day one?! Who's the one who spent hours helping you develop and control your camouflage?! Who's the one who hung out with you every single day?! Who's the one who was there to cheer you up whenever you were down, even to help clean cupcake icing off you?!"
"You-"
"And the thanks I get for all that is you turning your back on me when I needed you the most?! Oh and thanks for dumping stuffed animals on me and my friends at the party. That was real nice."
"It was only a prank, Mike."
"Only a prank? You and your friends humiliated us!"
"I had to prove that I was Roar Omega Roar material!"
"You see?! Right there! What sort of friends would make you do that in order to fit in with them?!"
"You have to make difficult choices in order to be the best, Mike!"
"Does that including turning your back on your true friends?!"
"That's not what I meant!"
"Then what did you mean, Randy?!"
"I don't know!"
"You don't know?!"
"I-"
"Just tell me, Randy!"
"I-"
"Why did you betray me?!"
"I-"
"Why?!"
"BECAUSE I WAS TIRED OF BEING A LOSER!"
Silence fell. Randy stared deep into Mike's eye and Mike looked right back into his. The only sounds were the birds chirping in the distance, the wood floor creaking beneath Mike's and Randy's feet, and the two arguing friends breathing deeply.
"I get it. I'm a loser. You can't be friends with a loser, now can you?" said Mike coldly.
"No...it's just...I've always dreamt of being something bigger," Randy explained.
"And you think a fraternity like Roar Omega Roar is your ticket to that? They're not trying to help you, Randy. To them, you're a desperate freshman who's only purpose is to help them get a little more popular. Nothing else. Look at what happened to Sullivan. They dropped him as a friend just because he failed a test."
"Sullivan isn't Roar Omega Roar material."
"You're right. He's more." Randy was taken aback. Mike placed his right hand against the doorframe. "We here at Oozma Kappa have been better friends to each other in the past month than those at Roar Omega Roar will ever be." Mike took a step towards Randy. "We were going to do big things on our own, Randy. Isn't that what we always talked about? You and me helping each other become the best scarers we could possibly be."
Randy took a step towards Mike. "I needed this, Mike," he said at almost a snarl.
"Really? You needed...this?" Mike asked as he took a handful of Randy's shirt. "I'm the one here who needs something. I have more at stake here than you do." Randy swatted Mike's hand away but remained silent. Mike pointed at himself. "If my team loses, I get kicked out of Monsters University and my chance at returning to the scaring program is gone." Mike snapped his fingers then pointed at Randy. "If your team loses, they just get put in their place and then most likely kick you out."
"That's not going to happen!"
"What's not? Your friends kicking you out or your team losing?"
"Both!"
Mike and Randy glared at each other silently for another moment. "Best chums? Yeah right," Mike sighed. Randy felt as if a knife had been shoved through his chest. "We're going to prove ourselves. We're going to prove everyone wrong. You, Roar Omega Roar, Dean Hardscrabble, everyone. You're all finally going to see how scary Mike Wazowski and Oozma Kappa can be!" Randy wasn't sure about what to say in return. Mike slowly backed into the house and grasped the side of the door. "See you tonight, Randall."
Randy jumped back as the door was slammed shut in his face for the second time that day. He stood on the porch in stunned silence for a few seconds before slowly turning around and walking away from the house. A pain began to form in the back of his throat and tears started to roll down his face. He quickly wiped them away and tugged at his shirt as he walked down the street. "I'm sorry, Mike," he said under his breath as he made his way back towards his fraternity house.
Meanwhile, Mike leaned against the closed front door and rubbed the tears away from his eye. "I miss you, Randy," he said under his breath before slowly heading back upstairs.
