title: black star
summary: maybe it was all a conspiracy, and she was caught in the middle.
notes: katniss's return to her district. it got my mind turning, how she'd have to be wary of everyone.
Her lips were red.
They were pursed, accompanied by a frown on her face, eyes strained. Whenever she thought nobody was looking, she scanned the crowd fervently.
She was searching for someone.
And she was nervous, fear in the way her fingertips played across her dress, orange so that she would not be missed and everyone would know her.
"Can I help you with something?"
But she composed herself, breathing in deep and turning – and stopping. Stopping dead as her eyes, gray, met blue. Glassy blue, the kind of blue that was blinding and fixating, where you wanted to look away but couldn't.
Except for that wasn't the reason why Katniss couldn't break the stare.
This was her. Irony seethed into Katniss's bones as she recalled the pin, the golden treasure that became her symbol. It was as if this girl in front of her had planned it all along. Maybe it was all a conspiracy, and she was caught in the middle.
Wait.
It was.
Breathe.
"Madge," she finally managed, evenly, but she knew that the girl across from her had caught her slip. The mayor's daughter remained ever calm, pale eyes on pale skin curtained by pale hair. It was hard to imagine her anything but delicate and obedient; they were opposite to those ignorant to their true personalities.
"Katniss," she replied finally, her eyes daring to show the slightest hint of pity. "I'm sorry that –"
"No." Red lips pursed again, this time in anger. "Leave me alone."
And with that Katniss turned around and walked away. But translucent blue eyes followed her in the crowd, in that flamboyant dress that had stolen her inconspicuousness, and Madge tried to grasp where they had went wrong.
