A Fight To Remember

A computer monitor lit the dim room. Even though it didn't brighten enough to see much except slightly distorted shadows, it was enough for the insomniac. L sat staring at the screen, eyes wide, as usual, in his very unusual position. After all, he didn't want to dull his brain by sitting the way a normal person would sit.

His bruise-rimmed eyes flicked quickly back and forth across the screen, reading about the most recent deaths Kira had caused. Biting on his thumb, he gently rocked in the comfortable office chair. His long, thin hands moved from their places at his mouth and on his knee to type some notes, rattling the cuff and chain around his wrist.

A small groan and another clanking chain sounded from beside him. He glanced at the passed out Light Yagami. Light had only been sleeping for a short while, and unlike himself, he couldn't take the strain of pulling a week's worth of all-nighters. The raven-haired detective turned back to his note taking, reminding himself to move his hand more carefully from now on, not wanting to bother his sleeping companion. L was starting to think that maybe chaining himself to the student, and suspected murderer, might not have been one of his better plans. It seemed the stress of his own sleeping habits were beginning to affect the boy.

'Although,' thought L, 'being under this kind of stress and sleep deprivation may cause him to slip up and give himself away.' But he hardly believed that. Both Kira and Light were smart, very smart in fact. Even though he still strongly suspected him of being Kira, he knew that a slip up was highly improbable. After all, if Kira was that stupid, he wouldn't need to be on this case now, would he?

A soft sigh left his bruised lips as he removed his hands from the keyboard to pick up sugar cubes. After getting a nice hill of them, he picked up the nearby spoon by the tip, using his thumb and forefinger, and stirred his tea until most of the sugar had dissolved.

But being chained to Light was all that bad. It was nice having him around, even if he complained about it often. It gave him a chance to study the boy, try to delve deep into his mind. It gave him company, something which he sorely lacked in, even if one factored in Watari. They still had their fair share of arguments and fights. Still had their heated debates and their physical altercations. He found out that it bothered Light if he called him Kira to his face or when he raised his percentages. And it was always amusing to get a rise out of the boy.

Taking a sip of the sugary liquid, he smiled, remembering the argument he and Light had twelve hours ago...
