Rachel is the last one to walk into the choir room. She feels every eye in the room turn to her as she enters. Their voices stop as she crosses through the doorway passes them to get to the empty seat at the end of the front row. They were waiting for her.
After another moment or two, Will stands from his spot near the front and asks if anyone would like to start the day's round of numbers honoring Finn. True to form, her hand is the first and only one in the air. If things were different, happier, lighter even, she knows that someone would have at least snickered into their hand as a gesture of playful rudeness. But things are not like that anymore, so the room is completely quiet as she takes her place at the front of the room. As she says her piece about how she loved Finn and he loved all of them, she wonders why the place where she stands, a place she has stood so many times before, feels so foreign. Everything is different without him there. Nothing seems real to her anymore.
She vaguely hears the music start and slips into auto-pilot. She effortlessly hits the notes because she has sung them with him so many times she no longer needs to think about them. She gets lost in the music instead, and she remembers a time when she was content with having no duet partner, when in fact, she preferred performing alone. She hadn't realized what a terrible thing that was until a month ago when her favorite singing partner was stolen from her. No matter what her personal relationship with him was, she always wanted to sing with him. Even when she was dating Puck or Jesse she only wanted to sing with him.
But she would never be able to sing with him again. She would have many more duet partners throughout her career, but in her mind it would be as though none of them existed. Rachel Berry will always look back on her time with Finn Hudson as the only time in her life that she had a singing partner.
But now Finn is gone and her only partner is silence.
