She stood on the very edge of the tallest building in her city, feeling the world rushing around her. People, animals, and cars milled around below her looking no bigger than ants. She leaned further; a gush of air blew up against her face. Her long, blonde hair streamed behind her.
Chloe knew how easy it would be not to make this jump. She recognized the temptation this opportunity would give her if she was any weaker a person. Her life had become so full of turmoil over these last few weeks. She was the Uniter, and every one of the Mai looked toward her to fulfill her duty and ignore her human family and friends. Valentina especially wanted to tear her away from her own mother, but Chloe would never allow that to happen. She would stand with both of her people, Mai and human, and find a way to merge the two together.
Yet it was so hard keeping this secret for which she had never asked. She hated lying to her mother and not having enough time for her friends. She was exhausted from fighting with her mother, Amy, and Paul; trying so desperately hard to keep her secret hidden; and fighting both against the evil beings and her own people for the basic right to be herself, her own person, and be with all the people she chose as her loved ones.
She could end it all. She could stop having to fight, hide, and lie. She could stop all the arguments with one single misstep. She could be free. A pair of strong arms wrapped around her. "I'm here," a smooth voice whispered next to her, and Chloe knew she was no longer alone. Alek was with her, and it was going to be okay.
