"Most girls would be thrilled to find out they're the Uniter."
"Yeah," Chloe spat back with a roll of her eyes, "I know, and most of them would be just so happy to have you wanting them!"
Alek grinned. His pride and confidence in himself glowed on his handsome face. "Of course."
"But guess what?" Chloe demanded icily. Then she shot at him, "I'm not most girls!"
Alek sighed wistfully. "Don't I know it?"
She glared at him. "What do you want from me?"
"I want you to realize how lucky you are."
"How lucky I am? For what? For having my entire world turned upside down? For being killed and coming back to life? For having everything I've ever known ripped away from me?"
"That's not true," he spoke so softly that it startled her. "You have your family and friends still here." She could tell she'd hit a chord; her green eyes widened in surprise. "You've got us to help you learn your new abilities and keep you safe. That's more than most Mai get when the changes start."
She lowered her gaze from his in shame. He had been hurt in the past; he had been truly alone.
He stepped closer to her. "You're not alone, Chloe. Stop acting like you are!"
He caressed her cheek; she slowly looked back up at him again. "But what am I supposed to believe in, Alek, when I'm not even supposed to be alive? When none of this is supposed to be real but is? When we can do things we're not supposed to be able to do? When we are things that aren't supposed to exist?"
"Believe in me. Have faith in me. I won't let you down, and I'll keep you safe." He kissed her, and Chloe believed.
The End
