I read a note my grandma wrote back in 1923

Grandpa kept it in his coat and he showed it once to me

He said boy you might not understand But a long, long time ago Grandma's daddy didn't like me none

But I loved your grandma so

Sweat formed at his forehead; it ran into his eyes and dripped from his chin onto his green top. Deep Prussian blue eyes focused on the mass of Libra heading towards the earth, he and Wing Zero the only things blocking its path. Heero forced gulps of oxygen into his straining lungs to clear his head, set his jaw and engaged Zero's beam cannon.

The system ran slowly, Zero's outer shell was disintegrating in earth's atmosphere. His arm shook badly while forcing the cannon to operate and lock onto the large mass, his breathing labored. "Come on Zero" he muttered.

We had this crazy plan to meet And run away together

Get married in the first town we came to and live forever

But nailed to the tree where we were supposed to meet instead I found this letter

And this is what it said

Relena pressed her forehead to the glass of Peacemillions windows. Her heart thumped in fear for Heero, her lips moved in silent prayer for safety on his life. Already she'd lost someone she'd loved. Milliardo was gone, she didn't want to lose anyone else, couldn't. The braided boy Duo Maxwell had given her the only advice he could to help. He'd placed a warm hand on her shoulder and had simply said "Pray for him" before walking away. Hoping to God it would help Relena did as she was told.

Someone called her name, she squeezed her eyes shut and prayed harder.

If you get there before I do Don't give up on me

I'll meet you when my chores are through

I don't know how long I'll be But I'm not gonna let you down

Darling wait and see

And between now and then 'til I see you again I'll be loving you, love me

Heero locked on, and squeezed the trigger knowing it was too late to attempt stopping the large mass. The Libra would hit him and take him out. The impact would set off the self-detonating device and take both Heero and the piece Libra with it, saving the earth from Zechs's plan for destruction. His promise would be kept to Relena. He would take care of her, protect her from harm. Save everyone. The image of her flashed through his mind; her smile, her sparkling blue eyes. The cannon fired, hitting the metal mass head on. Zero's system overrode, Heero was thrust forward as the beam cannon exploded. Heero knew it was the end. "See you in Hell Zechs." The world around him went black.

I read those words just hours before my grandma passed away

In the door way of a church Where me and grandpa stopped to pray

I know I'd never seen him cry in all my 15 years

But as he said these words to her His eyes filled up with tears

Relena stroked Heero's battered face with warm gentleness; her fingers skimming over his skin tenderly and thanked God for sparing his life, for keeping him with her. Perhaps it wasn't for her that he was able to stay, but she was grateful all the same. Tears of thankfulness clouded her eyes. Heero groaned then, making Relena recoil a little. His blue eyes flickered open, caught hers and he tried to swallow.

"Relena….." he rasped. "Would you like some water?" Relena asked gently. Heero shook his head. On impulse Relena leaned forward and took his hand, mindful of the IV that had been inserted beneath the skin. Without hesitating Relena kissed it gently, receiving a look of weak reproach mixed with shock from him. "Relena what are- Relena smiled and put a finger to her lips to silence him. Almost gratefully his features relaxed and he fixed her with an inquisitive stare.

"I'm glad you waited for me Heero."

I don't know how long I'll be But I'm not gonna let you down
