Were You Mine.
Cain s perspective on his relationship with DG, as he begins to feel
DG/Cain Family
She was just a kid, and he didn't care.
Just a wide eyed innocent thrown into the storm, like everyone else.
Just a kid without even the sense to ditch the convict.
Wyatt Cain didn't want or need to keep tabs on DG.
He wasn't t even traveling with her.
They just happened to be going in the same direction. Once they reached the road, he would go his way and she'd go hers.
He didn't want her compassion and affection (Which, judging by the copious amounts of hugs Glitch got, was a lot of affection.)
She was nobody to him.
Nope.
Just a kid.
He was following her through the fields because..... She needed protecting and- and-and he had been a Tin man. It was in his training.
She was still just another kid.
A kid without parents, as sad as that was.
Yes sure she could use a father, someone to stand in and keep her safe.
But not him.
DG was not Cains daughter.
Just his responsibility until he got her to the mystic man.
She wasn't his responsibility now. He got her into the city. He found her the mystic man. The wizard could find her mother.
DG didn't need Cain.
And so, with only the slightest hesitation, Cain walked away. Out of her life.
Forever.
DG wasn't his daughter or responsibility; he was just here for Zero.
He gave his word. He promised the only man he could not, to this day, let down.
That was the only reason he stayed.
He repeated to himself over and over he felt nothing for these 3 drifters.
Cain told himself these lies until he almost believed them.
Almost.
She was gone, and he was too weak to travel. He had failed. Azkadelia had taken DG hostage
He stared down at the tower in consternation.
She was his daughter.
Not by birth or blood, but just the same.
He loved her like he loved his son.
And there in the hall, She hugged him with relief and surprise.
And when she hugged him, Cain knew what he ought to feel.
But all he could feel was numb.
