His Majesty, King Iceheart, My Lover

On Books

'It could not happen again,' he thought.

But the scene was all too familiar: the blood on the walls, the screaming…

him.

Those eyes were ever so tantalizing, cold and cruel. He was cunning, he had to admit. He must never let his guard down lest…

A hand descended on Bryan's shoulder.

"MOTHERFUCK—!"

There was a painful-sounding whack and a consequent thud. The Russian hurriedly wheeled about and saw Sanguinex sprawled on the carpeted floor trying to stem a bleeding nose.

"Sang! I am so sorr—"

The red-haired vampire stood up and smiled despite the injury. "It's alright. I'm fine. I shouldn't have disturbed you. What were you reading anyway?"

Bryan occupied himself with tending his lover's nosebleed. He frowned at the question. "A…a scary book."

Sanguinex nodded. "I figured."

The time was four in the afternoon. Sanguinex had run out of things to do in the humble apartment he and Bryan shared.

It was highly amusing how absorbed the lilac-haired teen could get when reading. He would stay in his bedroom, shut off from the real world, and Sanguinex would just watch the expressions on his face…how they changed from shock to joy to disappointment with every turn of the page.

It just so happened that now the vampire got a nosebleed as a consequence for his actions.

The pair sat in silence as Bryan continued to nurse Sanguinex's wound.

"What did you come in for?" the Russian eventually asked.

The redhead blushed slightly. "I was wondering if you'd like to have a snack or something…stretch your legs and stuff."

Bryan shrugged. "Sure."

They settled to eating popsicles on a park bench.

Bryan was lost once more in his own thoughts, unaware of being tenderly watched by his lover. The fur-fanatic was probably still thinking about what he had read.

"Does this mean you get scared easily?" asked the vampire, snapping his companion out of his reverie.

"What? No. You…you just caught me at a bad time," was the defensive answer.

Sanguinex laughed and Bryan frowned.

"What now?" the latter accused. "What's so funny?"

"Nothing," was his unconvincing reply. "It's just that there's a whole new side to you when you read."

Sanguinex stared at the earth beneath their feet and continued. "Normally, nothing surprises you as much. It's hard to make you laugh, and more often than not, you have one expression on your face for everything."

The Russian raised an eyebrow when his mate finally made eye contact with him. "You should be physically punished for your cheek," he said in a matter-of-factly tone. "But I'll be nice today."

A testy look came to the vampire's face. "And what brings this honor?"

Bryan didn't reply. Blue-green eyes considered him for a long moment before a bonafide smile graced usually-reserved features.

Sanguinex knew he no longer needed an answer. He was blessed enough to be the one this lilac-haired boy would share his self to…other than another book.
