She tracks him down to some dusty town in Who-Gives-A-Fuck, USA. She crushes his demons without blinking and he doesn't stop her, just watches her with sad blue eyes. Kali hates his eyes – Loki, Gabriel used to sometimes get a sad look in his eyes, just like that. But she always wiped it away with an easy kiss.
Kali throws herself at him, her body alight with flame. She roars at him, screaming at him in her language, his, English, whatever one comes to mind. He catches her by the wrists and twists her body until her arms are crossed behind her back. He holds her like that with one hand, like she's some errant child. Her pride will never recover.
"Now, now," he says quietly, his breath cool against the shell of her ear. "Don't want to waste my little brother's sacrifice now, do you?"
She turns and spits at him. He wipes it off calmly with the sleeve of his free hand. Up close, his face looks worse, white skin and horrible, peeling red burns. At least he washed the blood of her friends from his skin, leaving a scent she had often identified as Gabriel's. Angels carry a similar scent, it turns out.
Cursing him, Kali struggles and Lucifer holds her still, preventing her from doing any damage, even as the sharp heels of her shoes slam into his sneakers. Finally, he tightens his hold on her arms in warning until just before the bone snaps and she cries out in pain. "Are you quite done?" He asks. Continuing even though she hasn't spoken, he tells her, "I am going to let you live, because that was my brother's final wish. Even if you are a bottom feeding pagan."
Something in his voice changes and she turns back towards him. She wishes she didn't. Running down his cheeks, into the cracks and wrinkles of abused skin, are tears. Real, genuine grief and Kali is horrified. She goes still and Lucifer looks at her curiously.
"You loved him," Kali says accusingly, stunned. Lucifer lifts an eyebrow and she cries out, "You loved him and you still killed him!"
She wrenches herself away from him and he lets her go. Kali backs away from him, hands half raised as if to protect herself from his grief. "You... you foolish, flying fuck." When Lucifer frowns at her, she laughs, half hysterical, "I can't hate you because no matter what, you'll always hate yourself more!"
Kali moves away from him even more as Lucifer watches her warily. She lifts her hand and points to him, "you punished yourself more than I ever could. I wonder how you'll deal when you have to face Michael."
Lucifer's expression changes finally, but she's gone before she could see it.
