Chapter One: A Case, and An Adventure
"Oh, come on, Sammy," Dean pretty much whined at his younger brother. "We've been here for a couple of days now, what's a few more going to hurt? We're already here and this article has a pretty damn good case for us."
Sam heaved a heavy sigh and glanced over his laptop at the newspaper that was sitting on the table in front of Dean. It had been a couple of days since they had left the States to go to Scotland for Bobby to dig up Crowley's bones and Sam was pretty sure that Dean was just trying really hard not to get back on a plane again. This wasn't the first time they put off going back home. Dean had insisted they drive all the way to Loch Ness Lake on a supposed new sighting of Nessie, but lo and behold it was just a ruse to get tourists to go to the lake to hunt for the Loch Ness Monster themselves. Dean had insisted he thought it was an actual case they could've worked on, even after Sam found out it had come from a tourist brochure.
Sam rolled his eyes and looked back at his screen without even saying anything to Dean. He was just hoping his big brother would drop it, but he should've known that when Dean had his mind set on something he wouldn't drop it. 'Cause within the next second, the newspaper was shoved right into his face. He grabbed the paper out of Dean's hand in annoyance. "Dean," he said, in a highly irritated voice that was bordering on exasperation, "we are not going on another wild goose chase just to satisfy that your fear of planes."
"Oh come on, man," Dean said. "Do you really think I would send us on another Nessie run? How was I supposed to know that wasn't real? But this one is! I know it is!" To prove his point, Dean shoved his finger into the article he was referring to. The headline was the in big font and stood out from all the others reading, "Local Kids Kidnapped and Found Drowned in Abandoned Home".
Hoping that Dean now had his kid brother's full attention he quickly went on with his thought process. "From the sounds of it, all of the kids had gotten into some sort of trouble, whether it was an argument with a parent or getting into some sort of trouble at school. That following night, all of them disappeared from their homes. The neighbor of the abandoned house called the police and reported screaming coming from the house but by the time the police got there, the perp was gone and they had three kids' bodies."
Sam looked over the article, reading it for himself to make sure Dean wasn't just getting carried away again, before he looked up at his big brother. "We've gone to places for less," he said slowly. The only reason he was willing to bite at this lead was because something was gnawing at the back of his mind. He had heard of some similar stories about something like this back in the States from some hunters they had bumped into once. But what they were hunting, he couldn't quite remember.
"Alright," he said, shaking himself from his thoughts. "You go check out that old house and I'll see what I can find out about monsters that punish naughty kids by drowning them." He turned back to his laptop as Dean grabbed the keys to their rental and put his jacket on. Sam could've sworn he heard his older sibling mutter something along the lines of, "Man, I miss Baby" at which the younger Winchester rolled his eyes and got right to work on researching.
"Come along, Ponds!" the Doctor hollered over his shoulder at his two companions whom he had run ahead of.
Amy came up beside him breathing hard. "Doctor," she breathed, "why are we here? You said you were going to take us to see something you consider cool." She looked around where they were as Rory came up next to her. "It looks like we're just really close to home."
The Doctor turned to Amy and gave her a slight pouty face. "Oh, come on, Pond. Where's your sense of adventure? The T.A.R.D.I.S. had to have dropped us off here for a reason; don't you want to find out why?" He knew if he put it that way she would let it go and follow his lead for the most part and Rory would just go along with it if she did.
Amy rolled her eyes and studied their surroundings a little more closely. "So where are we exactly?" she asked as she started walking down the street with her husband and looking at the different buildings.
"Well, let's see," the Doctor said before licking his pointer finger and twirling around with his finger up in the air. "Scotland. Early 2000s." He turned and grinned at Amy and Rory, who that shared a knowing look at each other that said he had probably checked before they had left the ship.
Rory looked around at the little town they were in. "It seems really quiet don't you think?" he said as he noticed that there was hardly anyone outside. There was especially no little kids running around and playing. The Doctor and Amy frowned as they looked around, just noticing what Rory realized.
The Doctor let the couple towards a small town diner a little ways down the street that had two elderly men sitting at the outdoor table. "Morning, gentleman," he said as he pulled out his old leather wallet with the psychic paper in it. He flashed the paper at the gentlemen. "We're with health and inspection. We were just curious where everyone was?"
The elderly gentleman sitting on the right side of the table looked down the road and sighed. "They're probably all down at the cemetery for the funerals," he said solemnly.
The way he said that, caught the Doctor's companions' attention. "I'm sorry," Rory said. "Did you say 'funerals'? As in plural?"
The other gentleman heaved as sad sigh as he sat his drink down. "It's a shame really," he said sadly. "Those three kids died so young."
The trio gave each other a knowing look. They definitely couldn't just up and leave now. The Doctor turned back to the two gentlemen. "If you don't mind my asking," he said slowly, "how did the children die?"
The gentlemen exchanged a look of hesitation before the man on the left looked around and leaned in. "They were murdered," he said quietly, "in the old house a couple of blocks away. One was found with his head still in the kitchen sink, while during the autopsy, it was found that they had also drowned."
